This one is for my dj peers and a bit niche.
In recent years I've noticed something that surprised me but made me curious. More than a few djs I would play after had the cue button set to hear both songs at the same in their headphones.

Why did it surprise me?

Its not something I ever considered or found useful plus these kind of options on mixers really didn't exist when I started djing so it was never a thought.

I find it distracting honestly and my thought is that it might create a false of security.

One reason I have only one track playing in my ear is to train my ears to mix in the worst environments, you know the ones where the monitor is broken, sound is crap, equipment barely hanging on. In those situations really only I have is my ears to help identify any sound as an anchor to mix with.

Its hard for me to understand the benefits but always open to new ways.

Not knocking just curious.

Everyone wants to be a dj these days. This "trend" unfortunately seems to have diluted the actual highly creative, mental, spiritual and technical aspects involved.

I'm not trying to gatekeep or be elitist. I don't get to decide who is a dj or isn't

You should absolutely do this if you are passionate about learning the ins and outs.

I'll tell you one creative choice thats going on when djing..I'm thinking about if I want to stay closely within the genre or an adjacent one when. Like Bossa Nova mixing into samba, or totally switch things up but not too abruptly.

Now does the listener really care about all this?
On a superficial level probably not but on a metaphysical level more than they realize.

Therein lies the magic and artistry of djing threading the invisible line between seen versus the felt.
Just my thoughts.

It seems surreal that its been 25 years. I remember that day like it happened yesterday.
What I remember the most is the juxtaposition between the most beautiful fall day and the black smoke that covered the sky.
I remember riding the train to Brooklyn after watching the first plane hit on live tv not understanding what was happening.

The train car was so silent.

I remember the client I worked for calling me at work and telling about the second plane and to get home immediately.

I remember I was crossing flatbush avenue and saw thousands of people coming up from lower Manhattan covered in soot. I went into shock and I don't even remember walking the rest of the way home.

I grew up in a war torn country so 9/11 triggered my fight or flight so hard making me realize I suffered from ptsd.

The next day I went into the city like every New Yorker to see how I could help. The unity and collective grief we had was palpable. Everyone lost someone.

After that New York changed, so many people left including myself a couple of years later.

When a dj is setting a fee, one of many considerations is or should be the unseen labor of categorizing or what we call pulling records.
Every one has their own way and methodology but the fact of the matter is that it can be time consuming.
Now let's not get it twisted, it can also be fun and most times I get pretty distracted listening to records.

While other DJs place value on mass exposure, Jennifer Mayanja’s DJ ethos is about reverence and preservation of House music culture, while injecting love and craft of DJing back into the game.

Leonce born in New Orleans and now resides in NYC. Leonce is uncompromising, blending elements of American Urban and experimental Electronica, a hardline style that influenced his development as a producer.

BLKshine (Darryl Terrell) Detroit Born, Brooklyn based DJ & Visual Artist whose sound moves fluidly btwn the deep musical lineage of Detroit and the vibrant club cultures of Chicago & NYC. Their sets are smooth, intentional and a groove forward designed to pull you out of your head and back into your body.
Labor Day is a time to celebrate our achievements and appreciate our personal collective accomplishments. This party is here to remind you of the certain value that Black artists have in the history and future of House Music.
It’s a call to rejoice in our individual & collective achievements as we take pride in the contributions we make around the world.
