National Winners! šŸŽ‰

We are delighted to announce that our project Old Gwernyfed, Powys has been awarded as the National Winner in the Best Residential Conversion or Alteration to an Existing Home category at the LABC Grand Finals 2025!

The judges praised this project for its sensitive approach to restoring a historic building…

ā€œThis stunning conversion creates an extraordinary living space, with the entire end of the existing ruin glazed and a bespoke staircase made from glass and oak. Due to the sensitive nature of this Grade I Listed building, implementation of building regulations had to be applied with care and due diligence to avoid compromising the ancient fabric.ā€

The LABC Building Excellence Awards have long been established as the premier accolades within the industry; recognising the companies and individuals that demonstrate a commitment to competence, quality and standards in delivering safe and sustainable buildings for the communities we live and work in.

We had a truly special evening celebrating.

Thank you to everyone who worked on this wonderful project with us and of course the clients, for trusting us with their vision for Old Gwernyfed.

LABC Wales Winner - Best Residential Conversion / Alteration to an Existing Home.

Jenkinson Builders are extremely proud to have been part of this acclaimed project where Medieval history has met the present day.

In Circa 1750 the South Wing of this Grade 1 Listed Old Gwernyfed Manor House suffered a catastrophic fire. Resulting in the wing becoming a ruin until 2022, when Jenkinson Builders were commissioned to undertake this multifaceted project.

The work was carried out under a strict archaeological brief due to the historical importance of the building and land @cadwcymruwales

We implemented many different traditional trades ranging from;

- Stone carving to repair the stone mullion windows
- Traditional leaded lights and casement windows - @arkstainedglass
- Careful restoration to existing stone walls using lime mortar matched to existing

The clever design brief from @hookmasonarchitecture was to showcase by contrast, the original stonework with a modern frameless glass facade standing at an impressive 11.5m high, skilfully installed by @trombeltd

J A Francis of Knighton also provided structural steel to form the mezzanine floors and impressive roof structure enabling three new internal floor levels with maximised natural light and outward views.

Jenkinson Builders would like to extend this congratulations to the whole project team and of course the clients to bring about this magnificent transformation.

Thank you @hookmasonarchitecture for sharing the finished photographs.

We look forward to the National LABC Grand Finals in early 2026...

It’s not often the boss gets on the trowel these days, but you better believe we’ll document it when he does 🫶.

Here he’s preparing a test panel for clients to view @tymawrlime Rhondda’s lime mortar with cropped stone from site. The aim is to match the existing stone work and mortar when restoration work begins to the barns next year.

Morning site visits to assess a Church roof in a beautiful location, Bleddfa.

Bleddfa means ā€˜the abode of wolves’, and wolves were still to be found in Radnor Forest until Tudor times.

St Mary’s Magdalene Church has fascinating history; for years a mysterious mound at the west end of the church was thought to be a prehistoric burial chamber, but when it was excavated in the 1960s it was discovered to be the base of a substantial stone tower to the church. Excavations showed that the tower had been burned down, and it is assumed this happened during the revolt of Welsh patriot Owain Glyndwr in the 15th century.

Nestled in the heart of the beautiful Brecon Beacons, this is a completed project of ours.

In collaboration with @featherstoneyoung architects, we converted these old Welsh stone buildings to create a welcoming and versatile space for our clients growing extended family.

The brief was to retain and upgrade the barns as sustainably and low energy as possible.

We laid our first limecrete floor slab system from @tymawrlime and the barns also received hempcrete wall linings, lime plaster and sheep’s wool insulation.

An air source heat pump runs the hot water and underfloor heating.

Beautiful finishes include internal cedar cladding contrasted with exposed original wooden beams and local businesses @rodelljonesstovesandliving supplied the cosy wood fired stove and @brecontilestudio the beautiful kitchen worktop.

Thank you to Featherstone Young Architects for the photographs and our wonderful clients for trusting us with their brief.

The Old School | Yr Hen Ysgol

This has been a very special project to work on and we’re so pleased the new Black Mountains College building is complete and ready to start the next chapter with the community and learning at its heart.

Many members of the local community will remember the derelict Victorian school once serving as a primary school and youth club. This reimagined space has gone back to its teaching roots and will now provide teaching and community spaces for @blackmountainscollege

The projects design was to provide a space with low embodied energy and running costs by enhancing the buildings fabric but keeping in mind the importance of retaining key features such as following the design of the previous windows.

Instead of conventional synthetic insulation. The solid masonry walls were lined in Hempcrete blocks and finished with a clay paint. The roof and floor received sheep’s wool insulation from @tymawrlime and the flooring was finished with a natural, CO2-neutral Marmoleum.

A special thanks to Councillor William Powell, instrumental in getting the project off the ground, Featherstone Young Architects and Black Mountains College.

Thank you to @featherstoneyoung for providing the wonderful photographs of the new space.

This week we’ve been carrying out maintenance on this beautiful property in Pembrokeshire that we completed in 2018.

It features a Zinc roof, that is carved out like a wave, as a token to the stunning Pembrokeshire coast just 1/2 mile away. Along with many other attributes this property offers, the boundary stone walls were rebuilt by local stone masons who use a specific dry stone walling practice common in West Wales.

We could think of worse places to be…

Progress update; We’re nearing completion on this project on the Whitfield Estate.

Well done to our carpenters Paul and Richard and our bricklayers Ian, Joe, Mark, Pete and Rhys for your ongoing work on this project.

If you look closely you can see Flemish Bond brickwork with Ibstock Bricks. Since it’s 17th century origins in the UK, Flemish Bond has been a popular and attractive choice of bond pattern which uses alternate stretchers and headers on every course, with the headers centred over the stretchers underneath. This follows suit of other properties on the Whitfield Estate.

A Flemish bond requires diligent setting out and considered measurement and we think our guys have produced some lovely brick work.

Stay tuned for finishing pictures.

How do you get +120kg steel beam into position in an old Welsh Barn?

With a hoist, and many hands that make light work ā˜ŗļø.

This is one of our current projects in the Brecon Beacons, where the Structural Engineer has specified some steel beams to support an ageing roof structure.

Stay tuned for more progress on this wonderful barn, where we will be be using some sustainable materials; including limecrete, hempcrete and sheep’s wool.

WE’RE BACK!

Apologies for being MIA on the social media world, we were locked out. But we’re back in action now, and here’s a finished project in Ross-on-Wye.

We converted slide 3 into a beautiful new garden studio. Complete with gothic stone arches, oak timber frame made in house, bespoke interior cupboards and wardrobes and an impressive car port.

Well done to all the team at Jenkinsons for their hard work on this one.
