Moor Tower, near Hay-on-Wye, built early in the 19C. It once overlooked a grand house, but it is long gone and the tower now has panorama of fields and distant hills. It stood empty before becoming home to an artist in the later 20C. Most recently it has been restored as a holiday let with a clever interior by @mica_architects making the most of the space. Local builders @jenkinsonbuilders carried out the restoration. @hay_on_wye @thecottagecompanyuk #hayonwye #penoyre #georgephillipsmanners #folly As ever you can read the full story on the website - link in bio.

LABC Awards Grand Final National Winner 2025!

We are delighted to announce that the project Old Gwernyfed, Powys has been awarded as the National Winner in the Best Residential Conversion or Alteration to an Existing Home category at the LABC Grand Finals 2025!

The judges praised this project for its sensitive approach to restoring a historic building…

“This stunning conversion creates an extraordinary living space, with the entire end of the existing ruin glazed and a bespoke staircase made from glass and oak. Due to the sensitive nature of this Grade I Listed building, implementation of building regulations had to be applied with care and due diligence to avoid compromising the ancient fabric.”

The LABC Building Excellence Awards have long been established as the premier accolades within the industry; recognising the companies and individuals that demonstrate a commitment to competence, quality and standards in delivering safe and sustainable buildings for the communities we live and work in.

Thank you to everyone who worked on this wonderful project with us and of course the clients, for trusting us with the initial concept for Old Gwernyfed.

We are proud to introduce one of our latest projects: Old Gwernyfed Manor.

Located in 475 acres of picturesque Brecon countryside, this Grade I listed building is one of Breconshire’ most significant landmarks.

Working for Jenkinson Builders, under the direction of Hook Mason Architects, the task was to restore the 17th-century burnt-out wing, untouched for generations. The mission was to enhance the original stonework with a modern glass facade, blending history and contemporary design.

The newly renovated wing now includes a spacious kitchen, living, and dining area, along with a mezzanine office and a second-floor TV room. The 11.5-meter-tall glass facade fills the space with natural light, making it the heart of the home.

Interestingly enough, the manor’s minstrels' gallery is where Charles I is said to have left a message for Prince Rupert. We wonder what he’d think of this beautiful transformation!
