Summer 7 am x 2 🌞 We are so excited to offer a second 7 am Vinyasa time slot for the summer season 💫 Beginning this Tuesday with the lovely @jenleungjohnson 🤍 Please meet Jen 💫 As a multidisciplinary movement artist, educator and yogi I try to approach both teaching and learning from a place of rooted embodiment, curiosity, care and agency. With a background in dance and somatic movement practices, I’ve continually been drawn to body-mind centered work that support the expansion of our center of being outward. I approach yoga as both a tangible and intangible practice, one that clarifies and explores the connections between body, breath and inner landscapes. It is a means to know myself better as a student, teacher, artist and human. I completed my 200hr CYT with Citizen Yoga in Detroit, MI guided by Kacee Must and Anne Zemba of Yoga Medics. I also hold an MFA in Dance from Montclair State University. I currently teach yoga and dance at Salisbury University and Dancenter Salisbury. The experiences and knowledge gained from the roles I’ve held, both professional and personal, inform my teaching and insight. I try to approach my classes from a place of compassion for all that my students bring to their own practice. I sincerely love supporting who you already are and the insight you already have. Whether it be through holding space, offering challenge, encouraging play, or giving permission to simply be, I try to cultivate a space of openness and stability. In my everyday life, I enjoy creating, dancing, listening to the stories of humans and earth, gardening, reading (share what’s on your nightstand!), and practices that support wholeness and clarity of purpose. I’m honored to have been asked to participate in a group show highlighting Asian American artists during the month of May. My newest screendance and new media installation “Shǒusāng; keeping watch” will be presented on Friday, 5 May 2023 at The Art League of Ocean City in Ocean City, MD. Sound was an integral part of my thesis installation, so it was important to work with someone who could create an environment that resonated deeply. Here’s a little about the installation sound sculpture from @satyahinduja, founder of @alchemicsonicenvironment ‘間 Between Heaven and Earth’ is a spatial sound sculpture integrating Alchemic Electronica’s unique architecture of composition evolving from the film's soundtrack into three independent yet interconnected areas representing the process of healing and their connection to the spaces in between the materiality of the exhibition.  Designed with the intention of the metaphysical Hindu concept of Nada Brahma (the primal sound of being), these concepts are integral to the essence of Satya Hinduja’s work as it unfolds in response to the wonder and impermanence of the Universe. The multichannel sonic sculpture invites listeners into a deep listening journey revealing subtle sonic textures as one moves through space-time, conjuring the ephemeral essence of our living planet and humans' relationship to it.  The journey begins with the sounds of the making and pouring of hot tea leading to various elemental sounds of water rising into a space of void explored by sounds of sand, wind and 68.05 hz (representing the mind-body state between heaven and earth).  (Continued in comments) by @jenleungjohnson

This immersive screen-dance performance and MFA Thesis by Jennifer Leung Johnson is about the spaces we create and the breaks we rejoin through the process of healing. The exhibition presents an Alchemic Sonic Environment encompassing a spatial sound environment composed by sound artist and composer Satya Hinduja, founder of Alchemic Sonic Environment. This installation interweaves dance, digital media, trauma research, healing frequencies, neuroaesthetics and interactive elements to create an interdisciplinary and multisensory experience presenting participants with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the space between the tangible environment and the intangible realm of our perceived and imagined reality. 17 Mar - An abbreviated performance begins at 5:30pm, and an artist talk will follow at 6:00pm. 18 Mar - Live performers will be in the installation space from 5:30 - 7:30 (viewers are welcome to come and go at their leisure). 19-31 Mar - The installation will remain open to viewers (no live performers). From weekly zoom rehearsals to a 5 hour road trip, 3 days of filming and 4+ mile hike through the Grand-Staircase Escalante National Monument, working with my amazing sister @katy.slc and the divine @marina_omyolife was a memorable and spiritual experience. I am grateful for their open hearts and empathy toward one another, myself, the intent of this work, and the sacred lands with which we connected, danced and filmed. . “間: Between Heaven and Earth has inspired the first Alchemic Electronica soundtrack tuned to 68.05 Hz, the Earth’s primal frequency. The journey of this film score honors and responds to the ‘Kintsugi Spirit’ focusing on the spaces between the clay bodies of the self, the fractured self and its delicate relationship with the land; seeking repair. . The score was meticulously planned and composed with sounds and textures of nature, movement and breath alluding to persistence and patience. The Kintsugi Spirit Virtual Exhibition is live today! Available through 31 October. The artists Mariel Mayz, Emily Okamoto, Krystal Matsuyama-Tsai, Erin Shigaki, Andrés Vázquez, and I were all inspired by Kintsugi and created work with the intent to inspire healing and connection. I am honored to have been a recipient of this grant, to be counted in this group of thoughtful artists, have learned from Hirokazu Kosaka, and to work with compassionate collaborators.
