Last Saturday, our girls had the opportunity to be inspired by Jennifer Leung-Johnson at Dancecenter Salisbury in our Creative Movement Workshop. The Empowerees learned many different ways to express themselves through movement, and found inspiration through incredible historical women such as Malala, Harriet Tubman, and Sacagawea. The Empowerees then choreographed routines representing themselves and powerful women throughout history. We can’t thank @jenleungjohnson enough for leading our girls through this thought-provoking exercise and Dancecenter Salisbury for hosting us.

Today I had the pleasure of being able to photograph my beautiful girlfriend @s.mae.2020 performing in a dance exhibit put together by @jenleungjohnson. I have wanted to take photos of my lady dancing for some time now so it was really nice to finally have the chance. 😄 It was so neat to capture her form of art (dance) with my form of art (photography)… I look forward to doing it again soon 😁

“Length of time depends upon our ideas. Size of space hangs upon our sentiments. For one whose mind is free from care, A day will outlast the millennium. For one whose heart is large, A tiny room is as the space between heaven and earth.” ~ Translated by Kyoto Journal from Saikontan (Vegetable Roots Talks), Yuhodo, Tokyo, 1926.

The completed works of the five grant recipients range from music to dance, visual art to film. Embracing the flawed or imperfect, the artists explore themes of grief and intergenerational trauma, common struggles between communities, finding beauty in the broken, and how we fill the spaces between.

Japanese American Cultural & Community Centre commissioned five grant recipients to explore the concept of Kintsugi - poetically translated as “golden repair”, through various artistic disciplines, and how this Japanese philosophy can be interpreted as an approach to healing.

間 : Between Heaven and Earth was meticulously planned and composed with sounds and textures of nature, movement and breath alluding to persistence and patience. Introspective orchestral and electronic instrumentation builds on thematic movements of tempo and rhythm, while melodically arpeggiating gestures of dance and natural elements call for healing and trust for all. There is subtle magic in this composition, urging us to slow down while reflecting on the complex patterns of our lives.
