Screening + dinner party by Jenn & Dane
Monday, September 14 • 7 PM - 9 PM

Invitation:
Inbetween the Global Catalogue: Australian Experimental Animation

The Australian footnotes of experimental animation are easily overlooked. Much has been acknowledged for the work of Len Lye (although New Zealand born, he worked extensively in Australia) but in the decades thereafter, many independent and experimental animation works have shared only a soft presence in the experimental animation lineage.

At Kartul, I am ecstatic to show you my program of the small treasures in Australian experimental animation. Experimental animation in Australia has changed so much since the 60s, arguably in step with technology, but more significantly, through seismic shifts in state and academic funding for work outside the industrial/commercial complex.

On Monday, 14th of September 2026, join me to view the works that sit in-between the global catalogue. To see the new, formative and legacy works spanning over 40 years from Australia.

This night will begin with a shared vegan dinner cooked by Jenn and Dane! Come hungry :)

7:00pm - Shared meal

About two years ago, I had the immense privilege of working with Richard Lewer on an incredible project about Steve, who was living with dementia, and his family’s process of coming to terms with the diagnosis. It was a heavy and long project, but I’m deeply grateful to have contributed through animation, scriptwriting, and composition. Thank you @richard_lewer for trusting me. You’re truly one of a kind, and one of the most hardworking and genuine people I know.

The animation was made on laminex tables, through a mix of stop motion and time lapse, alongside live action and archival super 8 footage from Steve’s family.

‘Steve’ will be shown at the National Gallery @nationalgalleryaus and will tour nationally after.

Swing by @blindside_ari this coming Thursday 25th Sept for the opening of ‘𝑮𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒐𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚’

I made a little animation sculpture, using a rotoscoped Deal or No Deal episode (looped) set within a laser cut altar. Another work exploring the stylisations of khảm xà cừ. 🙂‍↔️

…The scent of fresh rice, wintermelon shrimp soup and braised catfish, remembering Home and Away, Deal or No Deal, or 7 News playing in the background as we ate. These shows became more than just background noise, they were inadvertent household deities, watching them in ritualistic devotion together. As my parents did not speak English well, the cheap drama of Home and Away and Grant Denyer’s gameshow charisma was compelling and a weird form of connection between us all. We didn’t always speak the same language, but we shared Deal or No Deal and cơm gia đình.

Thank you @timstaana for helping me out with the laser cutting & @blindside_ari for the support! by @jenn___tran

More patchworky semi wonky curtains I made. One for the study and one for the bedroom. I was donated a vintage industrial bernina from work so making these felt like i was working in a factory lol. Fabrics from @wearethefabricstore & @ziguzagu_textiles Cas the cat also featured by @jenn___tran
