I’m a full time mum + part time coach.
Life is hectic.
Most mums don’t have the village anymore.
And we’re constantly given advice by influencers in their 20’s on how to live a healthy life through self optimisation. You know the 20-step morning routines, the 1+ session in the gym followed by sauna, 8 hours sleep and a sleep hygiene protocols. Nutriton, carb timing, PWO smoothies, sitting down to eat.
I digress 😂
I used to be one of these people. And I couldn’t even get it right without kids.
When you have a baby you’re no longer your priority and that’s ok.
This is my permission slip to throw the self optimisation advice in the bin.
Be kind to yourself and know that if you carved out 20-minutes for a workout. And managed to cook dinner with protein and veggies you are still winning Mumma

If I had to pick just 4 shoulder exercises, here’s what I’d choose and WHY 👇

1. DB Thrusters
Okay, technically a full-body movement, but I love including something explosive in my workouts, so this one had to make the list! You’re working your shoulders, legs and core while getting that heart rate up. 🔥

2. Rear Delt Flyes
An underrated exercise! These target the back of your shoulders and help strengthen the muscles that support good posture. Especially important if you spend a lot of time sitting or hunched over.

3. Lateral Raises
Never underestimate the smaller muscle groups! These target the side of your shoulders and trust me, they BURN. You’ll probably need to go lighter with these than you would for a shoulder press. It’s all about control, not how heavy you can lift.

4. Half-Kneeling Single-Arm Shoulder Press
The name is a mouthful, but hear me out 😂

Pressing one arm at a time challenges each shoulder individually, while the half-kneeling position makes your core work harder to keep you stable. Shoulders AND core in one movement? Yes please!

You don’t need a gym full of machines to build strong shoulders. A pair of dumbbells and a few well-chosen exercises can go a long way.

Save this for your next upper-body workout! 💪 by @jennableakley

In just over a week from today, our SIX WEEK CHALLENGE kicks off 🚀

In six weeks you could be a completely different person.

Comment BLOOM and I’ll send you everything you need to know. 👇

Not “different” as in some unrecognisable, filtered version of yourself. Different as in energised instead of running on empty. In control instead of battling through it another week. Comfortable in your own skin instead of avoiding mirrors and photos until summer forces the issue.

Here’s the bit most people skip over. You don’t get there by waiting for motivation to show up, or by waiting for January, or by doing the thing you’ve already tried five times that didn’t work.

You get there by having an actual plan. One that fits your life, not one you have to rebuild your whole life around.

That’s what this is.

From $39 a week you get your personalised game plan, a meal plan built around you, real check-ins with real feedback, full access to the app and tools, and the option to add training on top if you want it.

No extremes. No starting Monday and quitting by Thursday. No more battling your way through a generic plan that was never built for your life in the first place.

Six weeks is nothing in the grand scheme of things. But it’s also enough time to feel like yourself again, just in time for summer.

Rego is open NOW.

Full app access (early!) with recipes from sign up!

We start Monday the 12th.

Comment BLOOM and let’s get you sorted👇👇

One year between photos.

I had contemplated whether to post this.
I wasn’t sure if it was even that impressive or if I would be seen as promoting “bounce back” culture.

But that’s exactly what this is not.

This is ONE YEAR between.

My results are from the lifestyle I live, not a fad diet or meds or anything else.

I’ve consistently trained at home 3 x a week for 30 minutes, with a few breaks for some injuries.
I have eaten mainly whole foods, prioritising protein.
I walk every day for around 30 minutes.

That’s it.
There’s nothing fancy.

I’m 39 years old, I care for my 14-month-old full time. I don’t spend hours in the gym or have the time to.

If you want to learn how you can make your own training and nutrition work for your lifestyle, come work with me inside the @fika.nutrition Bloom Into Summer Challenge.

I have a 6-week training program called Mumma Moves AND you’ll get 6 weeks of nutrition coaching with me too. by @jennableakley

September was a biiiiiiiiiiiig one for Fika Nutrition, and I don’t say that lightly.

We welcomed @jennableakley to the team, our new coach bringing at home strength training to the app for both our existing clients and our upcoming challenge 👀, no gym required, just dumbbells and 30-40 minutes, 3 times a week.

We watched our community keep proving why we refuse to niche down, performance, gut health, hormones, weight loss, all of it, all at once, because real bodies don’t fit in one box.

We are also NOW opening rego for our third and final 6 WEEK CHALLENGE “Bloom Into Summer” 🚀🚀 for the first time ever offering both nutrition only and nutrition plus TRAINING inside the app (we kick off 12 OCT!!!!) #run

AND, we’re counting down to @nourishher.byfika Intake 2, built specifically for the peri, menopause, bloating and inflammation conversations that so many women are told to just live with.

Nearly 7 years ago this started as my side hustle. Today it’s a team, a genuine community, and honestly, the best part of my week, every week. 🥺❤️❤️

Want in on what’s coming next?

You don’t need a gym full of machines to get stronger.

For my Mum clients, I love using dumbbells because they’re simple, versatile and give us SO much to work with. Annnnnnd if you’re training at home with a little one around your feet, they’re pretty practical too 😂

Here are a few things I love about dumbbell training:

1. Your core has to work.
You’re responsible for controlling the weight, so your body has to work to stabilise you throughout the movement.

2. You’ll notice your strength differences.
Most of us have a stronger side. Dumbbells, particularly single-sided exercises, make those differences much easier to notice and give us a chance to work on them.

3. You learn the fundamentals.
Squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling and lunging are the foundations of strength training. I want my clients to feel confident with these movements before making training unnecessarily complicated.

4. Your balance and coordination improve.
You’re learning to control the weight while controlling your own body at the same time. That takes more than just strength.

5. You can keep progressing without constantly buying more equipment.
We can increase the weight or reps, slow the tempo down, add pauses, increase range of motion or use more unilateral exercises.

There’s honestly a LOT you can do with a few pairs of dumbbells.

And before anyone thinks I’m anti-machine 😂 I’m definitely not. Machines have their place and can be really useful in strength training.

I just think dumbbells are a great way to learn how to move well, control your body and build a solid foundation of strength.

You don’t need a huge amount of equipment.

You need good programming and a way to progressively challenge yourself. by @jennableakley

You don’t need heavier weights to keep progressing 👇🏼

If you’re training at home with limited equipment, you can still make your workouts harder and continue progressing.

5 ways to do it:

1. Tempo
Slow down the lowering phase or control every part of the movement.

2. Pauses
Add a pause at the hardest part of the exercise. Hello, burn 🔥

3. Range of motion
Work through a bigger or more challenging range of motion where appropriate.

4. Reps
Gradually increase your reps while maintaining good form.

5. Sets
Add an extra working set to increase your overall training volume.

Progressive overload doesn’t always mean adding more weight.

Save this for your next home workout. 🤍 by @jennableakley

One thing that surprised me about becoming a mum is how my relationship with food actually improved.
I used to obsess over it. I thought I was being disciplined, until I would slip up. And then I’d feel guilty and the cycle would continue.
It wasn’t until I became pregnant and then a mum did I really experience food freedom.
