time is moving in a way that feels almost unfair, so this year, in a desperate attempt to slow it down, we went analog. we installed a landline, brought back the movie theater birthday party, asked for no gifts and received the most thoughtful handmade cards from the people we love, stayed out all night dancing at a dive bar, and stretched one day into nearly a month of celebrations.

Grief doesn’t change. Life grows around it.
Grief isn’t linear.
The tide rises. The tide falls.

After an agonizing year without you, Dad, I’ve come to find that at the heart of life (and death) and all the things we tell ourselves to get us through it, is that time truly doesn’t mean anything. Because it’s been a year, and just as the earth made its revolution around the sun, it’s as though I’ve wandered in a circle, leaving your hospital room the night you slipped away from us, and somehow finding myself right back where I started. Most days I feel like I never left.

Recently, we had a bunch of film developed. Dave took this photo of us all at the beach, and we just saw it for the first time this week. (Film has this funny way of making a memory feel brand new, or having you question if it even happened.) I realized in looking at this photo that this was your last time at the beach, your favorite place, but we didn’t yet know that.

So since time doesn’t mean anything anyway, maybe I’ll decide to turn back the clock and tell myself a different story—one where I never left this moment instead. And there we stayed, forever. No longer tortured by the ever-growing tally of days marked by your absence, but safe, together, facing the sun, measuring hours by birdsong and the length of our shadows 🖤 by @jennagkaplan

The fourth annual celebration of The Birthday Buddies™️ featuring one ✨golden bday✨ and all the Kaplan family favorites - pizza, cats, chocolate, friends, cocktails, sushi, pop punk, and having so much fun that we barely took any decent photos. I love you both to pieces 🖇️ 🎂 by @jennagkaplan

Our first Christmas without Dad was as expected - tearful, melancholy, deeply nostalgic .. but we still managed to find moments of joy in our collective despair. Most notably, through Aria - our daily reminder that his legacy lives on, and that the greatest gift is just being together. Happy holidays, and wishing comfort especially to those who are healing a wounded spirit this year ❤️‍🩹🎄 by @jennagkaplan

We lost my dad on Thursday and I am gutted. For the last few days I have been reliving the groundhog day nightmare of holding him as he took his last breath. I have never felt such swallowing, profound sorrow in my life. The grief is paralyzing. My body hurts from wailing and being curled up in a ball. Every night, in between bouts of restless sleep, I wake up in a panic, frantically searching the darkness for any sign of him. I’m untethered and adrift on a black ocean, stuck in an endless internal dialogue loop of what-ifs, regrets, and all the things I forgot to tell him. I just thought we had more time. The truth is, no measure of time would be enough. I don’t understand how I’m supposed to exist in a world where he doesn’t. The only thing I’m certain of is that part of me died with him, and I will carry that crater in my heart for the rest of my days. I love you forever, Dad. 🤍 by @jennagkaplan
