Building a motherhood that feels like mine 🤍

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I haven’t posted here for close to 2 years - not because I lost interest, but because my life changed, a lot!

This account was solely to share workout routines, training in different places and physical progression.

But that now makes up only a small % of my life, so to remain authentic, this space now needs to reflect babies, broken sleep, movement that fits around real life, and trying not to lose myself in the process!

I’m not here to curate perfection - I literally don’t have time! I’m here to share what this season actually looks like, in real life for me.

So if you’re also navigating motherhood, fitness, running a house, working, identity shifts, & just trying to find balance — I’m glad you’re here 🤍

Which stage of motherhood are you in right now? Newborn bubble, baby mode, toddler chaos or the calm after the storm!?

It’s true, we DO all have the same 24 hours.

But we do not all have the same resources, mental capacity, energy levels, non-negotiable tasks etc etc

Pre kids in my 20s my time was my own and I devoted a lot of it to training, meal prepping, general wellbeing

Now in my 30s with 2 kids & a husband my time is absolutely not my own ❌

I have a house to run, 2 children to feed, clothe, wash, play with, take to appointments and nursery and generally keep alive. I have a 9 month old who wins the Velcro baby of the year award and a never ending to-do list that often has to take priority.

When I do get to workout, it often looks like this - amended & shortened workouts holding a baby Jack to keep the peace 🤷🏻‍♀️

So while we do all the same 24 hours, our abilities & availability are most certainly not the same, therefore the results will also not be the same

Some of us are just out here to survive right now - hands up if that’s also you 🙋🏻‍♀️

Almost 10 months later 2nd time round and I still have no period.. I got it back at 5 months PP first time

I’m still fully breastfeeding Jack who is yet to really eat solids due to delayed digestive development and can’t have regular formula due to dairy intolerance + bottle refusal anyway 😫 so it’s all on me 😬

To say this is taking a toll at this point is an understatement

But I need to ensure i’m supporting my body the best way I can which in turn supports Jack, so i’m going to:

Get bloods done
Increase calories (esp carbs & fats)
Limit training - to be fair I rarely make more than 3-4 sessions anyway
Still get my steps for mental health and gentle movement

Once I get my bloods back I can see if I need to supplement or tweak anything in my diet to optimise internal health

How long did it take you to get your cycle back postpartum?

3 became 4 🥰🩵

Baby Jack joined our family a little earlier than anticipated on 01 May thanks to our amazing friend & doctor @draseligson 👏❤️

It’s safe to say Leo is slightly excited about his new baby brother!

If your goal is an hourglass but these aren’t part of your routine then you’re making life much harder for yourself! 😬

Follow @jennac.fit for more core building & healthy habits 👏

To build the hourglass shape -

❌ Stop doing endless ab workouts
❌ Stop eating in a huge deficit

✅ Train your upper body to build the illusion of an hourglass - an hourglass is wide at the top, if you’re always skipping upper day you’re making life tough
✅ Eat to build! If you’re trying to build a shape, what are you giving your body as energy to do the building? Focus on protein and live life hungry

It’s a process, follow the process and results will come 👏

I bet I know the mistakes you’re making! 🙈

If your goal is to have visible abs then STOP

1. Doing ab workout after ab workout
2. Doing endless HIIT / cardio workouts

That isn’t how you’re going to reach your goals!

Instead -

🏋🏽‍♀️ Resistance train 3-4x a week
🍓 Eat a well balanced diet in a slight caloric deficit to reduce body fat

The focus should primarily be on your diet to see visible abs as it’s all about your body fat percentage, but you do still need to train them to have muscle to show! 👏

Having visible abs is a great aesthetic goal, but make sure it isn’t your ONLY goal.
Try thinking about a weight you want to lift for a certain exercise or a length of time you want to run for etc as well because these goals give you something to really towards!

Everyone loves to tell you you’ll never have your pre-baby body back, but I love to prove people wrong 👏🙃

The body you had before pregnancy hadn’t gone through the immense pressure and strain that it has now

👉 Your abdominals have been stretched to breaking point, maybe even past for some
👉 Your pelvis widened to accommodate a growing baby and birth them
👉 Your muscles and tissues supported not only you but a whole extra human which can affect your posture and their strength ongoing

So much changes during pregnancy and it can feel like you’ll never return to your pre-pregnancy state or strength

BUT, if you give it TIME, CONSISTENCY & STRUCTURE you can rebuild stronger than before 💪👏

It might not be tomorrow, or next week, but the female body is incredible and was designed to go through these insane changes and return to normality after

It has taken me 14 months to get to a point I feel resembles ‘me’, although I still feel much weaker than I was before and my hips don’t feel like they have entirely returned to normal 🤷🏻‍♀️

What has your postpartum journey felt like?
Are you just about to embark on your own?

I don’t know about you, but i’m all about finding a sustainable, realistic lifestyle that helps me achieve my goal 👏

👉 Training 3-4x a week
👉 45-60 minute sessions
👉 No drastic calorie cuts that aren’t sustainable
👉 No pressure to hit a step count each day but consciously keeping as active as I can around my lifestyle
👉 No set diets to follow, just simple grocery shopping that allows me to make simple, healthy meals for the whole family
👉 No cutting out ‘bad’ foods or ‘earning’ them, just consuming in moderation if I feel like it

I used to get so upset if I missed a scheduled workout or I went over on my carbs and under on protein - I realise now that simply isn’t sustainable or even healthy for most! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I want to make this a space of realistic fitness expectations, easy workouts, no diet dieting and an all round sustainable lifestyle 👏🥳

Not exactly, but roughly 1900 calories & 130g protein 💪

I’m not tracking exactly, and not tracking fats or carbs at all really, just focussing on making sure i’m eating enough protein and enough calories as i’ve definitely been undereating lately! 😬

Finding it super easy to get my protein in now i’m back in ‘normal life’ with a kitchen and grocery stores 🥳

These are my favourite easy go to sources that mean I dont have to think about it -

- Protein shake
- Chicken
- Mince beef
- High protein yoghurt
- Eggs
- High protein bagels

I’m also ending the day with a little treat right now cos it’s been TOM with sweet cravings 😋

Here’s to the next phase 🥳👏

I feel like i’m forever ‘starting over’ recently - family sickness, crazy travel plans, injury - something always seems to pop up that has distracted me from creating a routine and regular training so it’s been as and when I can, always Bodyweight and usually pretty short sessions for the past 6 months

I’m actually pretty happy with my current shape overall, although i’ve lost muscle from lack of training and a bit of an unintended calorie deficit so it’s time to rebuild 💪

🏋🏽‍♀️ Starting slow and low over the coming weeks, weight training 3-4x a week and getting my steps in daily for movement

🥑 Focussing on protein intake with my diet and getting enough calories in to support my body while also breastfeeding still

Who else is taking those first steps again recently?
Remember we all start somewhere at some point - it’s never too late and you’re never alone 👏

Starting a postpartum journey can be a scary, emotional time

You don’t recognise your body anymore and all you’ve heard is how you’ll ’never get your pre-baby body back’ ❌🤦🏻‍♀️

Along with figuring out how to keep this new tiny human of yours alive, even having the time or knowing where & how to begin with getting your strength, fitness & wellbeing back can seem like such an impossible task

But small steps add up 👏 I started walking outside a few days after birth - more for my own sanity than anything else at that point! But things gradually & naturally built from there without a pressure to look a certain way by a certain time

Everyone’s postpartum journey will look different, it will take a different length of time, require different steps and present different challenges but the most important thing to remember through it all is how incredible your body is for having safely delivered your baby, however it was done 😘

Give yourself time, cut yourself some slack, find something you enjoy and watch the process 👏
