April is Limb Difference Awareness Month 🧡

Somewhere between worrying if she’d ever comfortably drink from an open cup and hearing her now say certain things are “too easy,” time did what time does.

This year has held both triumphs and challenges. Her fourth broken bones. Learning to ride a bike. Buttoning her jeans for the first time. Zipping and buttoning jackets independently. And mastering countless little things we once wondered how she’d navigate.

Raising a child with a limb difference means living in the tension of grief, awe, fear, pride, uncertainty, and celebration—often all at once.

But if there’s one thing Lavender has taught us, it’s this: kids will find their way. They adapt. They innovate. They surprise you.

To the parents in the early days staring at differences and wondering how your baby will do it all someday— they will. Maybe differently. Maybe creatively. But they will.

And one day you’ll blink and they’ll be telling you it’s too easy. 🧡🤗

Happy 6th birthday Lavender! I continue to be so proud of you and the kid you’re becoming. You are incredibly thoughtful, kind and inclusive.

And very extroverted. I love it when I am dropping you off at school and as we’re pulling up, you have the window down and are yelling hi to your friends like it’s spring break and you’re cruising.

You love talking to people and have no problem walking up and starting a conversation with someone, especially if they have on a pretty outfit or are wearing something you also own :)

You are still an artist and love creating things. From painting rocks to fairy cups to your new love of tape, hole/shape punching, cutting and gluing googly eyes to make critters.

You continue to be as fearless as ever - we’re only two weeks out from having your cast off from completely snapping both your radius and ulna in a fall from the monkey bars (bone break number four).

You’re a fantastic big sister. You watch out for Lucky and also know exactly how to rile him up and get his laughter rolling. You’re still wary about taking baths with him though, ever since he pooped in the bathtub...a few times (which is definitely understandable).

Watching you play with Lucky makes me so happy. It’s precious to see - he absolutely adores you. And I suspect you also like having someone to boss around - you often tell him to “Come!” like you would Archie or a dog. You’re not trying to be mean, but it makes me chuckle every time.

I look forward to sharing this coming year with you - seeing your eyes light up with wonder as you learn, grow and as your world expands.

You are a true gift from God and you will always be my Number One Girl. by @jennwelsch

2025 really tried to be like “but did you die?” And we really had to show it how we rebuild and spark our own joy brick by brick.

Too many friends and people we could tag here that got us through it all. Just wanted to remember those sparks of joy in the midst of a really challenging year. Here’s to 2026 🐎 by @jennwelsch

Image 1: the last photo Matt snagged when we decided to leave the house in the middle of the night as we lost power and could see the fire streets away.

Image 3: first confirmation we got that our home still stands.

Image 4: Lil Cats first hotel. This cat went from the streets to the Hilton. Much gratitude to @staceygsims and @micahdsims for helping house us in the chaos.

Image 5: this coat that the company I work for @grovecollaborative gifted at our last company retreat- little did we know it would become a baby blanket, a breast feeding cover, a pacifier holder, a zipped location for our keys and life-essential meds, a protection for my 4 year old to not look at the window at the flames, and my only jacket for the short term. A very good coat indeed.

With broken hearts we had to say farewell to Archie a few weeks ago. There are not enough words to describe how perfect he was for our family. An adventure boy and a master at cuddling- he did it all. The house and our lives have had a void since he left. Thanks for being with us for some of the hardest of times Arch, you gave us so much joy, comfort, and purpose. I hope heaven is the longest driveway for you to run down, a house filled with only pillows, and friends and family who you can continue to play with and bless. Miss you forever Archie. by @jennwelsch
