Happy 6th birthday Lavender! I continue to be so proud of you and the kid you’re becoming. You are incredibly thoughtful, kind and inclusive.

And very extroverted. I love it when I am dropping you off at school and as we’re pulling up, you have the window down and are yelling hi to your friends like it’s spring break and you’re cruising.

You love talking to people and have no problem walking up and starting a conversation with someone, especially if they have on a pretty outfit or are wearing something you also own :)

You are still an artist and love creating things. From painting rocks to fairy cups to your new love of tape, hole/shape punching, cutting and gluing googly eyes to make critters.

You continue to be as fearless as ever - we’re only two weeks out from having your cast off from completely snapping both your radius and ulna in a fall from the monkey bars (bone break number four).

You’re a fantastic big sister. You watch out for Lucky and also know exactly how to rile him up and get his laughter rolling. You’re still wary about taking baths with him though, ever since he pooped in the bathtub...a few times (which is definitely understandable).

Watching you play with Lucky makes me so happy. It’s precious to see - he absolutely adores you. And I suspect you also like having someone to boss around - you often tell him to “Come!” like you would Archie or a dog. You’re not trying to be mean, but it makes me chuckle every time.

I look forward to sharing this coming year with you - seeing your eyes light up with wonder as you learn, grow and as your world expands.

You are a true gift from God and you will always be my Number One Girl.

Lavender on your fourth birthday,

I am so so proud of the ball of brightness and daring that you are. You are filled with curiosity, energy, humor, cleverness and more than a healthy dose of tricky.

You are brave - you always tackle the hardest challenges first. At the park, you immediately go to the monkey bars or whatever else seems to be the most difficult. You went on Space Mountain and had no fear, so small that we couldn’t even see you in the picture afterwards.

You are still extremely extroverted, inclusive and kind - always making sure everyone is a part of the fun and getting a turn.

You stand up for yourself when you need to. You have no problem speaking up when someone or something is out of line and it makes me proud.

You love picking flowers. And putting them in ziplock bags. We walk around the neighborhood a lot (or Mama Pat and Papa Pat’s backyard) just so you can get all of them.

You love art, “the colors of the rainbow”, drawing, Elsa, butterflies, and princess dresses (especially ones that spin well or sparkle).

When you find something amusing you’ve recently started doing this over-the-top high pitched laugh that makes me chuckle so much.

And when we put you to bed, you ask for “one more hug” and “one more kiss”, which usually turns into several rounds.

You are stubborn just like the rest of the family and you and Little Cat have become especially close, probably for that very same reason.

I am so so grateful for the joy you bring us. You truly are Number One Girl. Happy 4th birthday, I can’t wait to see what the next year brings!

I didn’t post on this Instagram account for 5 years. I never stopped shooting. But I was just so burned out with promoting my work. I kept shooting but I didn’t feel inspired, I felt obligated.

So I quit posting. Cold turkey. Didn’t miss it at all. And in the last five years my photography business grew more financially successful than I ever dreamed possible. I learned that it is possible to have a successful business without posting on social media or trying to grow a following.

This January I made the decision to start posting my work here again. And it’s been freeing. Bc I feel proud of my work. I don’t feel like I have anything to prove. And I don’t care about going viral or gaining ton of followers. I just feel compelled to share my work. And that feels really good.
