Happy Bat Boy Cat Album Release Day! This one has filled me with joy and purpose. I will always love that this show started my time as AD of musicals at @nycitycenter. The collaboration with @alextimbers is always so fun and he teaches me about producing every time. @mcyellowsound and Michael Croiter produced the album with the love and devotion you would show a human or bat child. @andrewresnick18 was an invaluable partner to all of us as we navigated these new gorgeous orchestrations while putting together a kick-ass band. And I love this cast to pieces. The last video is Larry getting misty at the listening party. Love your Bat Boy. by @jennygersten

🌈 happy pride tutti.

La Cage Aux Folles at NYCC has been utter joy. What an incredible way to complete this Encores season @nycitycenter

Costume Designers @clintramos and @michellesawthis designed the Cagelles opening look for “We Are What We Are” to represent an array of Black divas who inspire Queer folx, specifically folx of color. This was the first thing director #RobertO’Hara told me about when I asked him to tell me about his vision and I didn’t have to look any further to understand the deep and powerful ethos of this revival. And then @egoconcepts and @dormeshia brought it into technicolor with the amazing, iconic choreography. So grateful to this entire company led by @theebillyporter and @mrbradybaby, they are all exquisite. And grateful to our fabulous designers (@misterdavidzinn, @itsadamhonore @megumgums and maestro @josephjoubert88keys )who created a perfect world for this Encores.

It has not felt like the best of times (gestures broadly) but this show helped remind us what it feels like to be in community with each other when we center the beauty of art making and chosen family.

BIRTHRIGHT is a new play by Jonathan Spector. It’s in previews @mcctheater and the cast is dynamite and Teddy Bergman has directed it brilliantly and the designers have done formidable work. Please come see it, I’m so proud to be part of it.

What’s it about? It’s about three hours long. I know. And the audience is rapt. It’s genuinely hilarious. It’s about being Jewish, and having the best friends, and holding the contradictions, and looking at how the long tail effects technology have impacted our social connections and core beliefs. DM me if you want to come see it this week or soon. It runs through the end of July. by @jennygersten

Gus graduated with a %#MF MFA from NYU Tisch Drama today. As you can see, I am over the moon.

I am profoundly proud of my son who looked deep inside a few years ago and recognized his desire to be a performing artist. And then went for it with his whole self. He is a glorious presence onstage, a serious and committed maker, a person with joy to spread around, and I cannot wait for you all to see him and this whole fabulous cohort.

Also congrats to other Jenny (@jennysteingart)’s other Leo (Steingart) taken in Radio City Music Hall by @jennygersten

It is the annual photo — the only time they tolerate a mother and sons selfie. They took me out for the best drinks imaginable (truly). Watching them evolve into excellent, creative, funny, tender men is the greatest joy of my life. taken in Schmuck by @jennygersten

On New Year’s Eve I had a sort of enchanting, only-in-New-York kinda experience at a Scottish Social dance party that @wearenoisemaker created, cleverly. And then I hastily wrote about it and on a whim sent it into the Metropolitan Diary of the NYT and they published it, which is so cool but even more cool is this illustration that accompanied the ditty.

@ahjleee you nailed it! taken in Auld Lang Syne by @jennygersten

HAPPY OPENING LIBERATION

Almost exactly two years ago I talked to Bess about her new play that was about a group of women in a consciousness raising group in the 70s and maybe also about her mom. And something about them all being naked onstage.

I remember how clearly I could see it. “This is your Broadway play, Bess.” I think I said that to her even though it was **objectively** too soon to make such a proclamation.

“You wrote Our Town” is what I said to Bess after seeing this cast in @yesimwhitneywhite’s incredible production at @roundaboutnyc in February. A play that spoke about our lives in such a universal way that it just had to make you weep about living and parents and children like we do at Thornton Wilder’s Act 3. I love this play so much, as created in deep and powerful collaboration with Whitney who is, let’s face it, a goddess. I have loved Bess Wohl since the year 2000 in Williamstown and I cannot believe I get to be part of this moment.

And can we talk about the 👏 Yondr 👏Pouch👏 exhilaration of not having your phone for two hours? This phenomenon has created a kind of deep listening and engagement at the James Earl Jones. The audiences there are in community with these characters and these stories. I see conversations at intermission and after the show — people are drawn to stay in communion. What else do we want from theater?

LIBERATION is very much a female enterprise. Produced by women, these partners are such forces of integrity and vision, I’m so grateful to learn from @daryl_roth @evarprice, and my beloved friend and oft-partner @rachsuss.

Happy Opening LIBERATION. You are stupendous in every way and I hope everyone comes to see this one.

Fringe Week 2 part 2!

1) Micaela checked in ❤️
2) I love it here
3 & 4) LA CLIQUE back in the Spiegeltent, a Fringe classic circus, but truly these performers knocked my socks off. Especially dazzling acts by David Pereia and @tara.boom
5) JULIA MASLI hahahahahahaha I don’t know what to tell you all, it’s my 3x seeing this show and I could see it every day for the rest of my life. I’m pretty sure Julia is making the world a better place one performance at a time.
6) K MAK AT THE PLANETARIUM Incredible music making and gorgeous musicians, such a complete surprise and delight.
7) RED LIKE FRUIT was a provocative play — I struggled watching it — with wonderful performances and thoughtful direction. Such great writing by Hannah Moscovitz.
8) LIAM WITHNAIL: BIG STRONG BOY Loved this comedian, what a good time
9) TEEN ODYSSEY from a theater company in Mallorca, this immersive physical piece explores the contradictions of how adults treat the younger generations, and the tech surprisingly offered a lot of empathy. The best use of tech I’ve ever seen in a theater. and moving too
10) MIRIAM MARGOLYES AND DICKENS this woman is such a treasure. Miriam was at WTF with us in Dickens Women and The Learned Ladies way back when and she’s even more extraordinary now. I loved this time with her.
11) HOLE! THE MUSICAL By far, one of my favorite things I saw at Fringe. Utterly inventive, total commitment to an idea, and rigor in the writing and performance. I was blown away and know we will be seeing so much more from this team. Fab direction by RJ Tolan. Thank you for getting me in, @benjnelson11
12) look at this dreamboat who showed up. Lucky me.
13) BATSU sold out at Udderbelly. My 2x! Such a vibe. taken in Edinburgh, United Kingdom by @jennygersten
