POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I spent the last three years, pouring my anger and sadness at the slow motion train wreck that is our democracy into a play about jaded political operatives in a bare knuckles brawl to swing highly contested congressional midterms. When the events of the play began to have eerie parallels in real life, it was suggested to me that this unusual collision of art and life offered an opportunity. Three weeks later, thanks to the generosity of an incredibly talented group of actors, producers and friends, it is my pleasure to invite you to a live one night, only staged reading of “Smear.”Join us this Sunday 11/1 at 7pm in NYC for a fundraiser to benefit the invaluable work of @statesprojectus and @statesforum For venue and ticketing info, click the link in bio.

Anyone who knows me knows what this show means to me. I literally talk about it every chance I get, and how hearing the words, “Dominican Republic” for the first time on a Broadway stage changed my life. I was a sobbing mess because it was the first time I ever saw myself represented on stage, why I even dared to follow my dreams, and why I am where I am now.

This is so full circle for so many reasons, but overall, to now step into the role of Daniela, originated by the incredible, @theandreaburns.

She and the entire cast have been an inspiration to me since then, and years later, I got to make my Broadway debut with her and many other OBC members that I now get to call my friends. 😭

I am SO grateful. See you en el barrio. 🇩🇴

Feast your earballs & lock up your cows.. the @batboymusical cast album is streaming now!!!! If you had told little Marissa & her friends while they were running around blasting the cast recording of Bat Boy that later in life (a little bit less) little-er Marissa would get to BE on a cast recording of Bat Boy… she would have giggled in your face. This show & these people are JOY… but THIS is just the cherry on the top of the cake. I love musical theater. I love Bat Boy. 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇

I have to tell you about a play called BIRTHRIGHT which opened tonight at @mcctheater It's a major new play of great insight and beauty, written by Jonathan Spector @spectorama (Eureka Day) and directed with exquisite sensitivity by @teddybergman , with an absolutely sensational company of actors who live and breathe inside these roles like they've been genetically engineered specifically to play them. It is a play about seven American Jews and their relationship to the state of Israel over a quarter-century. It is written and performed with such skill that it never feels schematic or predetermined, which is really rare in my experience.

I'm going to tell you two things: 1) You might have heard that it's three and a half hours long. It IS. But it does not feel at any moment like a chore or like an "epic," it feels like a full and complete three-act play in which every beat adds up to something important and beautiful. (And it's also really funny.) I get bored really easily, and I get restless really fast, and I was never bored or restless throughout this entire play.

2) I think every American Jew will understand this play and be moved by it the way I was. It is not just acutely observed, it is deeply lived. This playwright knows these characters all the way in and out. By the same token, I have no idea whether this play will resonate in the same way to non-Jews. I imagine it's still powerful and the jokes will still land very well, but there are certain sequences which, even for very secular Jews like myself, call up a primal sense of belonging and understanding, and I felt very much seen, very much connected, in a way that I honestly don't very often in the theater. So while I very much encourage everyone to get a ticket – it only runs through July 26 – I must say particularly to my fellow Hebrews, I think this is an important piece for us to see and champion right now.
