G4 Paradies Garage 🌼🌱✨

‚We found paradise on a debris hill in a garage complex, that was used as a dump site for years. We were desperately trying to map and measure this paradise, calculated, drew, set up Excel sheet and discussed the paradox of trying to garden a paradise. Nonetheless we decided to intervene into paradise to set up an intimate space for social interaction inside a beautiful field of goldenrod‘

Now resting at our outdoor experimental site at @fherfurt_architektur: the Otto Hetzer truss has found its temporary home. Students from #speni’s architecture and civil engineering programs constructed a purpose-built timber support frame, enabling safe storage and further examination on-site.

This relocation, once again realized with the valuable support of @deutschebahn, marks the start of the second phase of »Prosthesis«, our design-based teaching and research format.

Together with associate researchers @anna_bajanova (@udkberlin) and @jenscasper, the @unbuildinggroup continues to rethink construction not as a static condition, but as a layered, circular, and interdependent process — guided by critical inquiry and material practice.

Sincere thanks to all who contributed to this carefully orchestrated transition.

The next chapter in our design-based research format »Unbuilding Group«: a 14-meter glulam truss — more than 110 years old and originally fabricated by Thuringian timber pioneer Otto Hetzer — was carefully prepared to travel to the campus of @fherfurt_architektur for further steps. Students from #speni assisted in demounting and securing the structure to work with it on our experimental outside premises.

After carefully dismantling, 3D scanning and developing of a concept for logistics, this recovery from the future »ICE City« construction site in Erfurt was realized with the generous support of @deutschebahn . Lifted by crane and secured for transport, the physical dislocation of our truss now marks the start of the upcoming second phase of our teaching format »Prosthesis« – as material witness, object of inquiry, and collaborator.

The project is developed in close dialogue with our associate researchers @anna_bajanova (@udkberlin ) and @jenscasper from the @unbuildinggroup, a collaborative format within and beyond SPENI to rethink construction as a process of ongoing transformation — circular, layered, and interdependent. Thanks to everyone involved for the sensitive handling of material and machines.

OPEN CALL School of Garage 2025

Garagen waren schon immer mehr als nur Abstellräume und Platz für Autos – sie sind Orte des Machens, Tüftelns, Reparierens, des Zusammenkommens.

In der School of Garage treffen Ende August Künstler:innen, Aktivist:innen, Designer:innen, Architekt:innen, Wissenschaftler:innen und lokale Communities aufeinander, um gemeinsam neue Perspektiven auf urbane Räume, Nachhaltigkeit und solidarische Stadtgestaltung zu entwickeln. In neun Garagen entstehen temporäre Ateliers – jede mit eigenem Fokus: Von Technologie & Upcycling über Urban Gardening, Storytelling, Solidaritätsarbeit, Raumaneignung, Theoriearbeit bis hin zu mobilen Werkstätten. Die Garagen werden zu Laboren für Ideen, Austausch und kollektives Handeln.

Wir laden Menschen aus Chemnitz und der ganzen Welt ein – ganz gleich, ob du mit einem gestalterischen, handwerklichen, aktivistischen oder forschenden Blick auf die Stadt schaust. Werde Teil der School of Garage und bewirb dich jetzt! → Link in der Bio

Memories: in sping 2019 we visited Philip Johnson's Glass House in New Canaan (1949), the Pavillon on the Pond (1962), and the Study (1980) within the pastoral landscape of Johnson's estate, designed by Johnson and his partner David Whitney. #philipjohnson #philipjohnsonglasshouse #davidwhitney #newcanaan

Philip Johnson (1906-2005) between 1932 and 1940 was an active propagandist for the German Nazi government, and he was listed as among the leading American Nazis. In 1939 he went to visit Poland with the Wehrmacht. He later distanced himself from his views, but... Harvard removed his name from the former Philip Johnson Thesis House "due to his widely documented white supremacist views and activities".
