Mary… did you know there would be approximately 7,482 paintings of you breastfeeding Jesus? 😂 ok maybe not that many… but I genuinely had never thought about Mary nursing Jesus until Italy. Apparently the Renaissance artists thought about it A LOT. As we’re almost two years into breastfeeding, these paintings spoke to me and begged the question…

When I was 10 years old, I begged my mom for a Juicy Couture (IYKYK🤣) Eiffel Tower necklace. To me, Paris wasn’t a city. It was a fairytale. It was quaint cobblestone streets, chic little cafés, artists painting on sidewalks, and lights that somehow looked softer than everywhere else. It felt less like a place on a map and more like a scene from a movie I’d watched over and over in my head. I didn’t know how, but I knew one day I’d make it there. My mom bought me the necklace. Looking back now, I realize that necklace probably wasn’t a small purchase for her. But when you’re 10 years old, you don’t think about things like that. You just know your mom somehow makes your little dreams feel possible. Over the years it followed me from jewelry box to jewelry box, through every room I’d ever called home. Every time I found it while cleaning things out, I’d smile, hold onto it for a second… and put it right back. I literally never wore it. I was waiting for Paris. (Scroll for more)

When I clasped it around my neck beneath the Eiffel Tower, I was 10-years-old again. Sometimes, as a new mom, it’s easy to forget you’re just a girl living life for the first time, too. Maybe this is what people mean when they say we’re our ancestors’ wildest dreams. Not because I did anything extraordinary, but because somewhere along the way enough ordinary sacrifices from those before me added up that a little girl from Texas got to twirl beneath the Eiffel Tower wearing the necklace she’d been saving since she was 10. Michael and I were actually supposed to go in 2020. Flights were booked. Hotels were reserved. Then, like so many other dreams that year, this one quietly went back on the shelf. Life kept happening: we got married, moved states, built careers, became parents. The trip kept getting pushed back. Twenty years after I first begged my mom for it, I finally zipped the necklace into my suitcase. Meanwhile, Michael (who is approximately 5% French according to Ancestry) was basically returning to his homeland he said. (Scroll for more)
