"Take the kinks out your mind, not your hair." (Marcus Garvey)

Shout out to @mellymelle14 for reminding me of this oh so powerful quote by the late, great Marcus Garvey. ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽

And this same principle is applicable when designing and implementing curriculum from a culturally responsive place and space.

Y’all… language learning is so much MORE than just learning words! 🤟🏽

So thankful to be entering YEAR TWO of our Spanish S.W.A.G. partnership with @thebmeaschool!

Our amazing scholars are learning the Spanish proverb “No hay mal que por bien no venga” - reminding us that even in difficult situations, something GOOD can come out of them.

We learned it in Spanish and American Sign Language, while having real conversations about how to apply this wisdom to everyday life.

Language learning + social-emotional learning + real-life application = skills for LIFE! 🙌🏽

I LOVE seeing our scholars engaged, thinking critically, and flexing their linguistic skills!

Don't limit our kids. Equip our kids.

Exposure matters.
Youth voice matters.

Our Jessie Feliz OST Youth Trainees had the opportunity to attend the Detroit Kids Deserve Better Rally, hosted by @482forward

From hearing local leaders discuss our schools, to watching a powerful animated short, to connecting with high school and college students actively engaged in civic action - our youth got to see what it looks like to use your voice and get involved.

And one of our own trainees was interviewed and got to share HER perspective as a Detroit student!

We don’t just want our youth to know about their community. We want them to know their voice has a place in it.

A Day in the Life of a JFLC Youth Trainee.

Y’all… TODAY was a DAY! 🙌🏽

Community engagement. Service learning. Mentorship. Civic awareness. Reflection. Good food. And some good ol’ FUN!

Our OST Youth Trainees started right here in Brightmoor, visiting a neighborhood community garden @indiascommunityparkllc, and then headed to the Izzy House dedication in support of Minister Rob and the launch of The Mandate Movement, a mentoring program pouring into young Black males.

Next stop: the Senate Theater, where our youth listened to local leaders, watched a powerful animated short/documentary, and - most importantly - heard directly from Detroit high school and college students, parents, educators, and community members about the realities facing Detroit youth and schools. They heard perspectives from communities different from their own, looked at both the stories AND the data, and then had an opportunity to reflect on what they experienced. Shout out to @482forward for coordinating and facilitating such a meaningful and impactful event for the community!!

Then we slowed it ALL the way down with a little time by the Detroit Riverfront - Y’all, it was a BEAUTIFUL, #puremichigan day!

And because we had been moving ALL DAY... we finished it off with some good food from @lajalisciensedetroit.

This is what I want our youth training program to be about. Workforce readiness, yes - but also exposure, service, community, awareness, reflection, relationships, and JOY.

We are not just preparing young people to work. We are helping prepare them to participate in and contribute to their communities.

Don’t limit our kids. Equip our kids.

Y'all... Something I've been working on just became REAL!!

In my hands.

I'll show you everything Sunday.

Spanish S.W.A.G is growing.

And my city, @cityofdetroit has given me bread for the journey (Startup Grant).

All Praise to The Most High. 🙌🏼

It is He who has made us and not we ourselves.

Community partnerships for the WIN!

A special shout out to Jonathan Marceau, founder of @spellingsafari, for joining us at the Jessie Feliz Learning Center and training our OST Youth Trainees on the Spelling Safari App!

Our teens got hands-on experience with the app so they can support their younger buddies as we incorporate it into our after-school program to strengthen spelling, decoding, phonics, and reading fluency.

We are SUPER excited about this partnership and even more excited to watch our scholars grow!

Thank you, Jonathan, for investing in our youth. There’s so much more to come!

Don’t limit our kids. Equip our kids.

Y’all… this was DAY ONE!

Shout out to these awesome 5th graders at @davidellisacademywest flexing their linguistic skills through Spanish, English AND American Sign Language - all at the same time!

This is @spanishswag - creating and strengthening multiple neural pathways for processing language through music, movement, repetition and joy!

No prior practice. Just scholars willing to jump in and learn!

So excited to continue our Spanish S.W.A.G. partnership with David Ellis Academy West.

Don’t limit our kids. Equip our kids.

“In every community, there is work to be done.” — Marianne Williamson

Y'all... THIS is what community partnership looks like!

Earlier this week, I met Lorome Ussery, owner of Ussery Landscaping, at our Schoolcraft Business Alliance Meeting, and within one conversation we realized we had something in common: a desire to pour into our young men.

Lorome came to the Jessie Feliz Learning Center today and gave our OST Youth Trainees a hands-on Landscaping 101 experience. From learning to operate a riding mower and weed whacker to talking about work ethic, responsibility, and how learning a trade can lead to gainful employment - he POURED into them.

This is why we cannot operate in silos, y'all. We ALL have something to contribute. We ALL have work to do.

I'm incredibly grateful for Lorome saying YES to our youth, and I'm excited that this isn't a one-time experience. He's coming back!

Community partnerships for the WIN!

Don't limit our kids. Equip our kids.
