We Already Dug the Grave by Emma C. Wells
3.5⭐️

This book was like a southern gothic version of Practical Magic…but replace witches with fortune tellers. And lots more family trauma.

Nothing Tastes As Good by Luke Dumas 3.5/5⭐️

Emmett wants nothing more to be than to be a “normal” weight after being obese his whole life.. when a drug trial for a miracle drug called Obexity is asking for participants he jumps at the chance to lose weight. When he starts to see results that are nothing short of incredible it’s enough for him to overlook the weird episodes of memory loss and the fact that people who were mean to Emmett about his weight seem to be involved in unexplained violent attacks.

This was a really interesting story. It was pretty funny at parts but it is also a commentary on health, body shaming, food addiction, and social pressures surrounding body image.

The Eye of the Bedlam Bride by Matt Dinniman 4/5⭐️

There’s a lot to this one, which is book 6 of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. But for the most part it’s a super messed up Pokémon card game and spiders. Oh also someone loses an eyeball…because someone else ate it 😳

Five Little Pigs by Agatha Christie 3.5/5⭐️

Poirot solves a cold case at the behest of the daughter of the victim and the person found guilty of the crime. This was fun because Poirot was interviewing all the key players and trying to sort it all out based on the memory and perspective of five key people. Very clever!

The Witch Elm by Tana French 4/5⭐️

What if you did something terrible and had no memory of it?

Toby and his cousins had an idyllic childhood at their uncle’s house outside of Dublin. But a gruesome discovery in the garden calls all of that into question.

This is a slow psychological burn. To me Tana French writes like Stephen King without all the gore. She takes her time telling us all the details of everything and then it all comes together in the end. This book was scary because it made you think about how well you could really trust your memory of things from your past. Loved it!

Big Little Truths by Liane Moriarty 4/5⭐️

Seemingly perfect people in a seemingly perfect town.

It’s ten years later in the town of Pirriwee and Jane, Madeline and Celeste are no longer dealing with the politics of kindergarten. Now they get to deal with all the problems of teenagers as well as all of their own problems.

I love these characters so much. I have been looking forward to this book for a long time! LM has such a knack for writing a story with so many little details and knows how to pull the whole thing together with a twist or two for good measure.

Land by Maggie O’Farrell 3.75/5⭐️

Tomas and his son Liam, working as his apprentice, are mapping Ireland in 1865 when Tomas has a profound experience that alters his plans for the future of his family.

This was a really good story. I love Irish history and folklore and humor and this has all of that. But I think this is mostly a story of a complicated but loving family that is dealing with the long term effects of the famine and British colonization.
