Woke up to a chilling 35F this morning, same breakfast as the days prior coffee and oatmeal, before heading to white sands. The roads to the park entrance are staked with multiple UFO and missile warning signs, scary. Exploring the park’s wave-like dunes and overlooking the white sands brings “a call to the void” feeling like overlooking the edge of a cliff. Tried sand boarding with the snowboard, bad idea. Got an oil change soon after and drove down to Marfa Lights Viewing Area on US-90 and camped for the night. No Marga lights spotted.

Change of plans today, making my way to White Sands first before moving down the national parks in Texas seems like the move, so we can summit Guadalupe Mountains and not rush it 🚐 by @jetlagjohnny

Hiking up Wasson Peak in 72 deg weather in t shirt and jeans, while watching incoming planes make incredibly low flybys into Tucson Airport. Met an amazing lady at the park who did an 8 day expedition into Grand Canyon, gave some great tips for camping at Big Bene and a ghost town at Terlingua just outside the park. Camped at Baylor Peak trailhead next to some cows, semi, and campers that rolled in after dark.

There is a choose your own adventure vibe to this park. Hiking the backside of the painted desert inn worth the visit 10/10. Mineralized trees and logs are littered everywhere, exposed to the elements. Got chatting with another car camper on the trail, half way into his national park journey, showed me this petroglyph that i would have missed if i wasn’t looking. Camped at the Tucson BLM outside of Saguaro NP, this BLM is sketchy at best.

“All park facilities are closed due to COVID” a sign posted at the park entrance. No visit to the Pueblo people cavern palace, the balcony house, or the tree house sadly. Still found a few good hikes around this park. Showered at the local Love’s, facilities are a little hit or miss. Arrived outside the Petrified Forest National Park gift store at 12pm, woke up to a freezing 13F dip the next day.

Feel like you arrived at a smaller but wider version of the Grand Canyon. Wished I had time to drive down and explore the canyon floor. The neighboring gas prices were easily 3 times the normal. Drove down to Farmington shortly after to pickup a new blower motor to fix the AC. Now the AC is fixes but the cabin fan is always ON? Resupplying at the Safeway just outside of Masa Verde NP. Camping tonight at BLM land outside of Route 34.
