Sex Militant at @mdw.coalition Detroit

“Temporary Autonomous Zone”

Chromogenic color print, protest flag carried in public demonstrations, stone plinths, hand-painted banners, used memorial candles, funerary flowers, fabricated steel surveillance cameras, floodlights, found barbed wire, and mixed media.

Site-specific installation. Dimensions variable. 2026.

Part shrine, part barricade, part memorial, Temporary Autonomous Zone examines the tension between surveillance and solidarity. The work asks how communities gather, remember, and protect one another under conditions that seek to regulate, police, and constrain the body.

I was in Kenya to learn about global work in abortion and reproductive justice, and I left feeling more certain than ever that this struggle is not being fought in isolation. The attacks are coordinated across borders, but the resistance is too.

Nairobi was spirited, restless, and contradictory. I have rarely met people as generous, welcoming, and kind.

Naturally, after flying 18 hours, visiting the Maasai Mara felt less like a choice than an obligation. I fell asleep to the grunting, huffing, guttural sounds of hippos at night, and I will never forget the thick smell of a freshly killed zebra or the leopard curled beside it like a house cat, blood still staining its mouth.
