A shell doesn’t have to end at the table.

Every year, 10 million tonnes of oyster shells are thrown away, enough to cover 70,000 football pitches.

We saw a material.

SEACLAY transforms discarded shells into something you can hold, use, and keep. Objects, furniture and surfaces, made from roughly 80% shell. Air cured, never fired.

Two years in the making by our team at Fahrenheit.works, and we’re thrilled to finally launch it at the Seaweed Suite, NYC, during Climate Week.

This is a different way to make.

Today I’ll be speaking part of Bautopia on the topic of making process between shell waste and bioceramics and its integration with mapping.

The argument is that mapping is a design tool rather than documentation, and that choosing a material is a cultural decision as much as a technical one.

Portugal produces 4’000 tonnes of oyster shell waste and 13’000 tonnes of shell waste overall (mussels, clams and oysters) each year. This feedstock is currently discarded in landfills and open land, where it contaminates soils. We collect shells from local suppliers and treat them before processing them into tiles.

The Story:

Here is a portrait of Nelson, an emblematic figure of the Abakuá community in Havana, and of a philosophy rooted in solidarity and in what we owe the people around us. He let us into his world for a few days with @alejandro.guirola

This is also a way for me to reach out to you regarding something close to my heart!

I am running a crowdfunding for Akokán, an educational space in Los Pacitos, one of the poorest neighbourhoods of Havana. It holds a library of over 6,000 books, runs workshops for the children of the block, screens films, and gives them somewhere safe to spend their days.

Cuba is living through the hardest crisis it has known, and power cuts now stretch past 48 hours. The people who keep Akokán alive are doing it while trying to make ends meet themselves. We are raising money for solar panels and a new roof so the space can keep going, and we are already in touch with a contractor for the installation.

Any amount helps, and sharing this with people who might care means just as much. Every euro goes straight there.

After one year in the making, I’m proud to release this short film today.

TEMPER HAS A NEW HOME.

We’re opening the doors to our first permanent space: Piscina do Muchaxo.

A place with a lot of history, a lot of character, and one of the most iconic pools around Guincho.

For now: pool + bar.
Sauna coming soon.
Pizza coming even sooner.

We’re three friends who call Guincho home, architects, surfers and creatives trying to do this place justice and bring it back to life.

And, as always, we’re taking the seriousness out of wellness.

Come hang out. Swim. Drink something. Soon, sweat too.

Created with the vision of crowdfunding for the AKOKAN educational lab in Los Pocitos, Havana.
