I once pitched the smallest retail space in the world. Sadly the odd landlord never got back to me. I called it Shims. It was a tiny coffee bar wedged between two buildings. by @jfavour

Shell Tower

I've always believed that cell towers, infrastructure, and utilities are inherently ugly not in general but because theyre so purpose-built and hyper-functional, that they don't bear any responsibility to be beautiful.

I thought it would be interesting if we could wrap these utilitarian lattice ladders and faux “monopine” structures in something that was more aesthetic and beautiful, and make them more of a distributed network of beautiful art objects that dot the landscape of our community.

More of a wild and diversely curated @_desertx or @stormkingartcenter , a nationwide installation of multiple art pieces that live within the landscape, and serve a more beautiful purpose beyond mere connectivity, whilst also silently working to hide the functionality of our consumption behind a casing of meaning. That we could create shells for these hollow bodies. To wrap them in something more striking. An RF transparent material that acts as a kind of sleeve for their purpose.

All paid for by the utility companies. It’s @verizon x @officialheatherwickstudio. Utility plus art. I call them Shell Towers.

There’s a lot of talk about data centers right now.

The power consumption, the heat generated and the water needed to cool them. What if we buried them?

Inspired by the ancient step wells of India. The idea is that we use the natural geothermal properties of subterranean construction to mitigate heat, while using a closed loop system of water in the ground instead of valuable surface water and create new ecosystems that support and regenerative future.

I call them Data Wells. by @jfavour

Water Shed

I’ve been on a housekeeping tear the last few days going through years and years and years of work and ideas, trying to make sense of them all (and there’s A LOT). Last night I scrubbed and deleted probably over 7000 images, that I’ve made over the last few years with Midjourney. Some of them are very strange and surreal, beautiful and wonderful,

I use it to dream sometimes. Feed it poems or a simple line. Seeing what we dare to dream up. I’m still trying to figure out what to do with it all and how to share it, give context and what I was thinking in that moment. Sometimes its interesting just to take an idea from a few years ago and run it again and it turns jnto something so much more unique. Here’s one that I stumbled upon and recreated. It’s not that “wild” but iis beautiful.

It was an idea born out of my childhood growing up near the Yuba river in the Sierra Nevada mountains, spending time among those silent, monolithic spaces that live in between the mountains. Where water roars nonstop but the stones aremuted. I always imagined what it would be like to live between the rocks, a silent perch meditating above.

This the vision that came to me. by @jfavour

It’s June 6. A super prominent day in terms of military history, and I’ve been struggling with what to say about it or if I should even post, but I just wanted to acknowledge this day. Its a big part of the reason that I joined the military.. the Army to be specific. I felt compelled to serve this country and fight for something that I thought was important. My grandfather, my mentor and hero, and his brothers, all newly born in the United States, to an immigrant family from Croatia and Austria, all went to war to fight for something that they believed was representative of what the United States stood for. So when I came of age, and I wanted to go serve, I joined the paratroopers, the 82nd Airborne Division to be specific. One of the most hallowed organizations in military history. It was important for me to participate in a group of people that fought for something brave and righteous. In the 40’s there was a sense of tyranny and derision and racism sweeping across central Europe and much like today with our current leadership. I feel like we have to stand up against bigotry and hate and racism. One of the greatest examples of that in my mind was always the story of the paratroopers, courageous young men that jumped into the dark, behind enemy lines to go fight for strong, moral values…and today reminds me of that.

In 1980 we were living in Kalispell, Montana. I remember when Mount Saint Helens went off, it was just days apart from when my sister was born and shortly thereafter, our small town was covered in inches of super fine white ash. When we peered outside our thin single pane sash window, it felt almost like the town was blanketed in a fine layer of snow and yet this was somehow more fearsome, apocalyptic and somber, and frankly dangerous. We did venture on days later. I don’t recall how it all disappeared from our lives. But it felt all too real in that moment. by @jfavour
