Haven't posted anything for a while as haven't been in the studio much between it being so hot lately & visiting Mum to help out with shopping laundry etc

When I'm on the train to Mum I often doodle to pass the time. Image 1 is A4 sketchbook pen doodle & as I was doing it I wondered what it would look like with a brush? Image 2 is a larger A2 indian ink painting which has made me think of calligraphy, this isn't text but has echoes of Chinese & Arabic script.

Interesting to see where this & other doodles might lead..

Had a bit of a finishing streak in the studio. First is a pastel painting of part of the Nabatean Archaeological site in Petra, Jordan. Visited about 20yrs ago & didn't get much done there as was absolutely boiling. I put off finishing this for so long because I didn't get decent photos & wasn't sure I could do it justice without.

But then I decided to be brave & work from my feelings & memories. I remembered the heat & shimmering light on the orange pink & multi coloured striations in the rocks. Not sure I've fully done it justice but pleased I've finally done it.

Second was summer 2024 in my local Beckenham Place Park where I did over half of the painting sitting in the field. Only 18 months to finish this!

Last two are ink paintings which took less than 30mins each & finished straightaway just to show not always a slowcoach!

Final class of 3 part personal project with @cazunderwood @all_art_pottery_performingarts
Spread over this term we set a goal back in early September, met in mid October to discuss progress and today to share final pieces.
I chose to work on a close up imagined section of sea, concentrating on building up layers of colour to create depth and movement. Looking beneath and through.
Acyrlic paint & gesso on A1 canvas board

Looking forward to seeing what we'll do in 2026 !

Obsessed by the sea. Love the challenge of ceaseless movement, finding patterns in the seeming chaos, the drama!

First is an A2 ink drawing based on a photo of stormy seas in Crete.
Second is A3 charcoal drawing started en plein air in Whitstable during a really enjoyable workshop with @liz_atkin few weeks ago and third also charcoal based on a photo supplied by Liz.

Available to buy unframed DM for details
