I am delighted to be showing work in ‘Cliff Edge: Textile Art on the Brink’ at Cromer Artspace @cromerartspace, a beautiful little gallery filled with perfect North Norfolk coastal light.

Curated by Jessica Loveday, Sandra Morris and Kate Farley, three key themes are explored across work by 49 textile artists - Disruption, Risk and Tension.

‘Still - 3’ explores divergence between structure and dissolution, presence and absence. The title evokes a film still: one fleeting moment within changing light and perception, between what is seen, remembered and disappearing.

Alas, I can’t make the trip from Glasgow this time, but the show is on until 12th October from 11am-4pm daily, so if you are in the area, I thoroughly recommend it!

Writing is an important part of my practice, both its physicality which help organise thought processes - I use a dip pen to slow me down, and as content in my work, where it forms its own rhythm and becomes illegible, embedding itself into the cloth.

I’m really pleased to be taking part in London Textile Month with @selvedgemagazine when I’ll be giving an online talk about all aspects of my printed textile practice - ‘From Essence to Substance - Creating Depth in Print’, and the long, slow process of making work. I’ll also be giving a virtual tour of my studio and doing some screen-printing; I do hope you can join me!

Tomorrow is the start of London Textile Month with @selvedgemagazine!

I am busy getting my studio ready for my online talk, tour and demo, and will share more about this in the coming days. In the meantime, here’s ‘Resonance’, the first piece of work I made in a ‘grid’ format. Grids are central to my work, acting as a design tool, a rhythmic pattern, and a metaphor for my complex family history. And by fragmenting unframed works into grid layouts, I can achieve complete freedom of scale, unbounded by the width of the woven cloth.

(Resonance now resides in ‘ The Current’ Hotel, Davenport, Iowa, USA)

I’m a printed textile artist and work from my studio in Glasgow. I dye, paint and screen-print primarily on linen, which is highly receptive to dye and image, the grain sensitively translating every little mark and brush-stroke. My practice embraces one-off works for exhibition, interiors and commissions. Working predominantly in abstraction, I draw inspiration from the domestic landscape and liminal space – both metaphorical and physical – informing not only the imagery but the way my work is made.

Through rigorous sampling, I develop bespoke colour palettes, building depth, luminosity and transparency through a distinctive multi-layered technique. My work is very labour-intensive with multiple stages before and after printing!

I look forward to sharing with you both my process and the space in which I work during my online talk in September with @selvedge as part of London Textile Month.

I’m honoured to be part of London Textile Month with @selvedgemagazine and will be giving an online talk about my printed textile practice from my Glasgow studio.

Translating photographic imagery onto cloth through screen-printing can be a challenge and I’ll be discussing this process and the various technical aspects that need consideration. I love using half-tone imagery to create atmosphere, slowly accumulating layers, which helps diffuses the dots and soften the stark digital edge; ‘Sleepwalker’ is an early example.

Screen-printing is often perceived as a quick process due to its capacity to replicate an image multiple times - but this is not what attracted me to the medium.

My work is all about layers - I think, feel, see and print in layers - which is why screen-printing suits me perfectly. I go about things the long way round…. Weeks before I even pick up a screen, I am going through a whole range of other processes, many of which a viewer would be unaware of. And when I do pull the ink through the mesh, that’s just the beginning as many layers will be built up and stripped away with subtle shifts and changes occurring each time. So it’s a very flexible medium, but on cloth there are also plenty of pitfalls!

I’ll be talking through this stage-by-stage way of working and how it informs the outcome of my textiles in my online talk on 9th September for @selvedgemagazine as part of London Textile Month.

I’m joanna kinnersly-taylor, a printed textile artist and designer, and I’m really pleased to be taking part in London Textile Month with @selvedgemagazine for the first time.

Working to commission has been an important part of my practice over the years. Usually the work is site-specific and requires a slightly different mind-set to my personal work. I enjoy researching the locality and bringing inherent qualities together to create something new that embodies a sense of place and time. ‘Tappet Wheels’ is printed on Irish linen and was one of a series of three works for the Mater Hospital in Belfast, and references the former linen weaving industry of the city.

I’ll be talking more about how I approach projects like this in my online talk for @selvedgemagazine as part of London Textile Month.
