Inspiration can come from anywhere and sometimes Artist studios are wonderful source of good vibes, inspirations or just simply a great moment of interaction. Last night we stopped by @jfkt_prints and @pulppaperartsworkshop at the @waspsstudios Hanson street who were celebrating their 25th anniversary with an open week end.

Seing work in progress or process steps I find most interesting and I think @mann.craft found both studios very fun. Practising artists have such geeky tools around them and even samples are so beautiful…

This weekend, we're celebrating 25 years of artist studios at Hanson Street in Glasgow!

The creative community at the building – spanning several generations and countless disciplines – are coming together to host an open studios event on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October (11am–4pm), giving visitors the rare opportunity to see inside their private workspaces.

They are also staging an exhibition showcase in the ground floor Project Space, which will capture the variety of media being practiced at Hanson Street.

Tasse @tasse_coffee_ will be set up to serve you delicious hot drinks and matchas on both days as well!

Hanson Street is a former cigarette factory in Dennistoun. The building was officially transformed by Wasps in 2001 to create 77 affordable artist studios, which today serve around 150 artists and makers, including the Glasgow Ceramics Studio and Glasgow Glass Studio.

Celebrate the occasion with the incredible painters, glass makers, jewellers, printmakers, ceramicists, sculptors and more this weekend by stopping by to explore. Free entry and all welcome.

Experiments in reactive dye and discharge printing by St Jude’s co-founder @angielewin from a workshop with @jfkt_prints in Glasgow last October. Work in progress for some seashore-inspired designs.

Last October after waiting short of 10 years for this to happen I finally grabbed a week’s course in screen printing with @jfkt_prints in Glasgow. I love her work and i wanted to learn from her how to create memories on the cloth. At the beginning I just could not afford her course … then it became irrelevant as I moved to eco only and anything synthetic vanished from my studio but then this longing of working with her was still there so last year I plucked the courage to approach her and I booked a week in October to spend the time with her and another creative artist who turned out to be the amazing @angielewin …

I decided to work on the theme of last summer … making the use of the gorgeous fabric I had found in the south west of France when there for teaching at @feutre_formation_france and some vintage books and diaries found in street fairs.

Joanna was so generous with her time helping me extracting the images I wanted and creating the screens that would work for my project. Over three days I started printing on old tea towels made of hemp and think linen some which we had dyed first … but time was too short so a few weeks back I went back for a few days and completed some prints on linen using all the screens we create and I love the result.

My aim was to experiment with superposing colours and discharging text and I think this worked well. In the last two sessions I added the colour orange to my otherwise traditional shades and I love how joyful it makes the print work.

The text came from a 1900 farmer’s diary, a pigeon competition record from the beginning of the 20th century, a calligraphy manual and the Cotinus prints from my eco work.

Yesterday was the only sunny day we have had in months and it seemed the perfect day to take a few shots of those … they could be ironed better :)

I believe @jfkt_prints will run one of her screen printing week’s workshop soon … grab a space she is amazing at making you reach your potential.

“Summer of 25” is a project I have been working on and off because it is purely for my own satisfaction using some of my collected fabric and trying to get a better understanding on how colours interact in the screen printing process. I have been using @jfkt_prints studio with and without her help to print some images from books, old diaries, and transformed images from my botanical prints buts it’s just a reason for playing with shapes and colours.
This week I managed to catch 2 days (don’t I know better that it is not enough… ) to start working on those four pieces… two gorgeous pieces of linen unbleached left over from #the igbanner project several years ago, I think it is Irish linen but I am not sure because it was a gift from @mandorsfabric at the time. One large strip of never used woven for tea towels hemp with its red stripes, and a bit of a #metis bedsheet from France.
This week I used the same colours as last October because it takes time to explore and it’s good to be limited but I exchanged the light pink for the gorgeous orange @angielewin selected for her own work last October and here it is … unfinished but pretty advanced … one of the 4 pieces.

I love the way the colours are interacting and how the discharge eats away at the different shades to achieve an even bigger pallet.

I will take any comments 🙏 now I need to gather some courage for a bold orange square in the middle of each piece 😅

Joanna organises week workshops but she will host you to use her facilities if you are deserving enough … she is extremely skilled print maker herself and her studio is but a dream to work in.

Last semester, two of our @hwu.sotd BA(Hons) Design for Textiles third-year students @harleyhendersondesigns @summerpilkingtonart got the opportunity for a week long placement helping @jfkt_prints with one of their wonderful workshops - amazing experience for our students and lots of printing fun had by all!

I had such a great week working with @angielewin and @bettysbeautifullife
Working alone most of the time, it’s always a joy to share the studio and one’s passion of printed textiles with other artists, and Angie and Elisabeth were the best company.

Some beautiful prints were achieved through sensitive exploration of layers and composition using reactive dyes and discharge on linen and hemp.

Productivity was enhanced by the hard work and enthusiasm of interns @harleyjhenderson_ and @summerpilkingtonart from @wipdft_gala

And it was over … 5 full days of learning, printing, interacting, in @jfkt_prints studio. I am sooo tired but so satisfied with my work and my new learning. That course has been on my list for years and as a super bonus it is around the corner from me.

The lovely @angielewin and her beautiful work was sharing the workshop time and it was lovely to meet her and share the time with her.

We worked so hard, learned so much and most enjoyed the gorgeous professional studio.

Now we rest !
