Fog has a way of softening the world, blurring edges and muting noise, until even the most familiar places feel borrowed from a dream. On this morning, a pasture in Florida became something else entirely—timeless, hushed, suspended between what is seen and what is felt.

The Sandhill Crane moved slowly through the mist, unbothered, almost ancient, as if the fog itself had summoned it. Moments like this remind me how a simple shift in light and air can turn the ordinary into something quietly magical.

I shot this photo on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at 5:00 am on approach into London’s Heathrow Airport. That’s Canary Wharf wrapped in dense early-morning fog. With almost everything except the tops of the buildings buried, the familiar skyline was reduced to something nearly abstract — less as “place” and more as “idea,” a classic in-between moment, neither fully “in the air” nor “in the city.”

The aircraft vantage reinforces that sense of transition: passing over the financial engine of London, yet it feels small, hushed, almost fragile beneath the cloud.

After landing, on impulse and whim, I sent the photo to one of London’s newspapers (I forget which). To my surprise — and delight — it appeared on the front page that afternoon. If anyone happens to have a copy from that day, I’d love to see it. DM me.

In the golden light of the Serengeti, a cluster of zebras gathered close, their stripes weaving together like living brushstrokes across the savanna.
