Have you seen @roomtomovefilm yet? ✨

This stunning documentary streaming on @netflix follows @jfreemover, a celebrated choreographer who, at 33, receives an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis that reframes everything she thought she knew about herself, her body, and her art.

We’re so proud to have played a small part in this story. Back in 2022, Jenn and @sonyatayeh brought their work-in-progress “Is It Thursday Yet?” to the Pillow Lab for a residency. Watching it evolve has been truly moving. Our Executive and Artistic Director Pamela Tatge even had the joy of attending the world premiere at @tribeca.

You can watch the full “Inside the Pillow Lab” short film from their residency at the link in our bio!

💙 Jenn Freeman's autism diagnosis at 33 became more than a personal discovery it transformed the way she understood herself, her experiences, and her creativity. After years of wondering why she felt different, receiving a diagnosis brought the clarity she had long searched for, leading her to say, *"I wish I had known much sooner."* ✨

Instead of allowing a late diagnosis to define her limits, Jenn turned it into something extraordinary. Through the Netflix documentary *Room to Move*, she transformed her lived experiences into powerful art, giving audiences an honest look at identity, self-discovery, and what it means to embrace neurodiversity. 🌍💙

Today, Jenn proudly identifies as an autistic artist, using her platform to help others feel seen and understood. Her journey reminds us that a diagnosis doesn't change who you are it helps explain who you've always been. And for many autistic adults, that understanding can be the beginning of healing, self-acceptance, and belonging. 💫

A new documentary on dance and difference
“Room to Move” may appear to be about dance. It is really about neurodivergence. The acclaimed documentary, streaming on Netflix from Wednesday, follows Jenn Freeman, a choreographer in her 30s who is losing her connection to her lifelong passion when she is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Though shaken, Ms Freeman is also given a new perspective on her life, allowing her to recognise her dancing as having originated in
“stimming”-the repetitive self-stimulation through which many autistic people regulate anxiety or other intense emotions.
Alexander Hammer, the director, deploys an immersive style reminiscent of both “Moonage Daydream” and “Afternoons Of Solitude”-two recent documentaries about David Bowie and bullfighting, respectively. This helps the viewer experience Ms Freeman’s life as she does: seeing what she sees and feeling what she feels (at least a little). In doing so, it provides a rare insight into how a neurodivergent person understands the world.
