Everett worked so hard today. He's had an eye on his 3rd grade fundraiser but doesn't say much.

Instead, I've seen him join me in the weightroom a lot over the last few weeks. This morning he was up early by himself doing leg exercises in the dark.

Then he ran red faced and breathing hard to about 3 miles in 30 min...after never having run a mile before.

No awards. No hoopla. Most walking which is cool too...still he just decided himself to lay it out without saying a word about it.

We're proud always, extra today 👊. by @jhashey1

Let's go to the Grand Canyon.

We had a plan to do the classic hike across the canyon and back with another "r2r2r."

Flooding closed that trail but we still wanted to get after it.

Pat, @ninja_on_the_mountains and I grabbed some discounted direct flights from DIA to PHX on frontier for around 100 bucks.

The plan was to fly in, drive straight to the canyon, hike for 20-24 hours and right back to catch the red eye out the next night.

We met up with Brent, @mark.freid and the man that made this happen @thevincegabriele .

After dropping in from Hermits Rest on the South rim, we planned to hike along the bottom of the canyon and up more popular trails.

Plans weren't perfect, but we all made it happen.

Trails were rugged, conversations were valuable and the food was A+.

Great times with solid people exploring corners of the world you can only can earn on your two feet.

Appreciate how Vince makes quality time happen with friends from across the country. 👊 by @jhashey1

Committed to finding the end of an overgrown, defunct trail behind my brother's house.

17 miles and a large mountain range later, we dropped out 2 towns over 🤷‍♂️. by @jhashey1

Mount Lindsey - 14,055 ft.

The challenging rock climbing at the crux wall was no joke. Lots of new practice with high consequence decision making.

No videos of the climb...hands were full.

A solid memory for sure.

Mount Elbert.

Mostly a video of me being winded in beautiful places.

Colorado's highest peak at 14,440 ft.

I haven't made time to get this one in yet. Rolled out at 3am to squeeze it in.

Cocadona mile 211.

At peace.

Embracing a prayer from Sean Lee as we part ways after spending a marathon+ and sharing life.

Accepting the learning only available in pain and struggle.

Taping things together.

40 miles left to learn from.

"Make friends with pain and you'll never be alone."

Thank you for the experience and memory @ultraseanman .

And for the picture @florisgierman 🙏 by @jhashey1

Building a log zipline with the kids for summer exercise.

We built the zipline last summer with this in mind, but got sidetracked with riding it and other shenanigans.

Rope rows, pulls, and other fun times with the boys to invest in one of their summer evenings.

PS. Don't be the city slicker that says something like "be safe." by @jhashey1

How weak did I get at Cocodona 250 (and why it doesn't matter).

Completing a 253 mile race through the dessert and over mountains took a lot out of me.

I lost 25 lbs and 3 weeks later, my strength is wayyyy down.

Here's 3 reasons why it doesn't matter.

1. My nervous system (CNS) is still shot. Trying to create the impulse to push weight right now is like flipping on a dim light bulb.

This will come back soon.

2. The numbers 3 weeks "before" are about where I've been for a decade +/- 10%. It's about all I'm going to get out of my build, lifestyle, and training preferences as a mid 40s year old with no interest in external performance enhancers.

I'd estimate in 3 months I'll be right back to these numbers...then hit the normal wall and stay there.

I'm good with that, no real performance, longevity, or health reason to push past these gym numbers. Gains can still be made on the trails.

3. Why train?

I had a well meaning nerd buddy ask why bother doing something that knowingly would cost muscle mass and strength.

Well, well meaning nerd buddy, why bother training if you're never going to do anything meaningful?

I could beat my head off the wall for a meaningless improvement of 1 bench reps over 90 days....or burn it all to the ground on an insane impactful experience and over 90 days I'll be a rep or two short.

Live a little...or a lot...or barely at all...

...I don't care, just make sure you are intentional about it 🤷‍♂️.

‐-------------------------------

No floating through life.

This is no different than a long battle with pneumonia few years back that left my lungs scared and me on bed rest. About 90 days later, everything was back online...although Cocadona was a much better story and experience haha!

Sometimes you take the known temporary L for a bigger W.

I'm looking forward to the challenge of rebuilding...

...and likely will do it all over again! by @jhashey1
