Update: Grand Canyon Hike

Two years ago I tried the Rim to Rim to Rim and failed. This year I wanted another crack at it.

I trained harder than ever. Huge thanks to Chris Merrit for a program that got me in the best hiking shape of my life. Then, a few weeks out, flooding destroyed the bridges connecting the North and South Rim. The R2R2R was off.

We had everything booked, so Joe mapped out a new route. It normally takes 3-5 days. We had 20 hours before our flights.

The good news was that the water stations were ON. Last time, shut-off stations got me in my head about running out of water, and that’s what broke me.

The bus dropped us off and I went to fill my bottle…

NOTHING.

An old guy sitting there said, “There’s no water in the entire canyon.”

As for the water, we all brought filters and found a few streams. That was a first for me, and I’ll never panic about water again.

The best part was the people. Joe, Mark, Brent, Pat and Rudy came from different friend groups, and we had a blast. There was tons of chop busting, wisdom shared, and a genuine love for the beauty of this place.

Arthur Brooks says happiness is a combo of Enjoyment, Satisfaction and Meaning. This trip filled my cup with all 3.

I didn’t get redemption on the R2R2R, but whatever this feeling is, I want to bottle it.

Last, none of this happens without my amazing wife Vanessa holding down the fort with our 3 kiddos. Being 3 places at once is way harder than hiking the Grand Canyon :) I’m truly grateful for the freedom she gives me to do things like this.

Awesome Day some very shape gym owners in our CEO Mastermind today at the Olympic Museum in Colorado Springs

Getting in the right rooms is crucial for business success.

These guys have been together since 2019 and counting, we did miss a few of regulars: Devin, Dan and AB but the crew stepped up big time

If you own a gym and need to be in a room like this to grow your biz.

Send me a DM

Savage vs Sheep: Which One Are You Becoming?
Team SGPT:
Modern society wants you comfortable.
Sleep in.
Scroll social media.
Eat junk food.
Make excuses.
Blame other people.
Stay soft.
Follow the crowd.
That is the path of the sheep.
But deep down, you already know that comfort is dangerous.
A savage lives different.
A savage wakes up early and trains when nobody is watching.
A savage attacks hard workouts instead of avoiding them.
A savage reads books while others waste hours online.
A savage keeps promises to himself.
A savage chooses discipline over excuses.
A savage understands that pain, struggle and failure are part of growth.
The sheep wait for motivation.
The savage builds habits.
The sheep complain about life.
The savage adapts and overcomes.
The sheep follow trends.
The savage builds his own mission.
In our recent SGPT interview with Joe Hashey after completing the brutal Cocodona 250 ultramarathon across Arizona, Joe talked about pushing through over 250 miles, massive elevation gain and almost no sleep. He reminded people not to let the distance intimidate them and to simply keep moving forward one step at a time.
https://sealgrinderpt.com/.../sgpt-interviews-joe-hashey.../
That is the savage mindset.
You do not need to run 250 miles to become stronger mentally and physically.
You just need to start making different choices every day.

Giant on the Mountain

My good friend Joe Hashey completed the Cocodona 250 yesterday — a massive accomplishment for any person.

250 miles. And not just miles — some were mountain climbs that took almost an hour to get through.

400+ entered, but only one giant. At 6’6 235, Joe was not the typical runner. If there was a plus-sized category, he’d have been required to enter it.

I (gratefully) had a front row seat to one of the great personal development experiences I’ve ever witnessed.
Over 98 hours: the ups, the downs, the strategy, the injuries… and the will to keep going for 150 MORE miles after you just did the most of your life (100 was his previous max).

At one point Joe finished a 26-mile leg through the night, totally spent, and calmly said: “I got nine problems right now and we’re just gonna solve each of them one at a time.”

The final leg was incredible — 23 miles to the last aid station, then a 19-mile climb to the finish.

Approaching that mountain in pitch black, you could see 4 guys climbing by their headlamps — moving stars in the sky. Nuts and intense.

At the final aid station Joe downed some coke, crushed 2 burgers, gathered all the caffeine we could find, and calmly said, “see you guys in a little bit.”

9 hours later he crossed the finish line — 2 hours ahead of his 100-hour goal. Total savage.

None of this happens without his crew chief Mell. She was a huge part of this success.

I paced Joe for about 73 miles, which gave us plenty of time to talk life and business.

The perspective habit is one of the most under-appreciated habits of success. When you do really hard things, the little inconveniences get so much easier.

Being a business owner is its own personal development experience — loaded with challenges and learning about yourself. A lonely one too.

If you own a biz, keep going. It’s worth it.

Add physical challenges on top, and that combination is a recipe for greatness.

So proud of you Joe Hashey.

Drop a comment to congratulate Joe.

Even as a coach, I still face the challenge of staying on track and navigating self-doubt. That’s why having someone to help you reframe, reset, and refocus is so powerful.

Grateful for a great day of coaching and some time out on the trails. Growth doesn’t stop—investing in yourself and your education is essential.

When your good buddy is in town for a few days that’s 3 weeks from running 250 miles…and he never stops moving for 72 hours
