We are excited to welcome Jordan Hill @jhill.93 to FLEET: Granville Island for an artist residency as part of the Emerging Indigenous Artist Residency Series! During his visit to FLEET, from January 3 - February 6, 2025, Jordan will be experimenting with an interactive new-media installation, interrogating the purpose of facade imagery used around urban development projects. Over the course of his residency, he will develop sculptural structures equipped with monitors and vinyl that the public will be invited to interact with. Through the FLEET studio on Granville Island, he hopes to further understand and recontextualize our relationship with public spaces and moments that otherwise discourage our critical attention.

Jordan Hill is a Coast Salish (T’Sou-ke Nation) new media artist from Vancouver Island whose work alludes to the blurred line between fact and fiction within contemporary culture. Hill questions how we navigate a spatially manipulated world where truth is incredibly difficult to locate both physically and virtually. He juxtaposes unexpected ideas and seemingly unrelated locales, uncovering the intersections between urban and rural facades in ways that transform how we think about both. Hill’s work utilizes our relationship with technology and virtual imagery in a way that helps us foster a deeper connection with the world away from it.

Incredibly delayed photos from August of my material exploration at @thevault_gallery titled “Aside”

Aside is a material exploration of vinyl siding, in which Jordan questions his relationship between vinyl and his sociocultural worth in his youth on T’Sou-ke Nation reservations. Retrospectively, he’s reflecting on his shift in perception: from viewing vinyl as a symbol of worth and wealth to recognizing it as a brittle, cheap façade that conceals infrastructural faults, and colonially inflicted trauma.

Corrupt Recollection (2022) -
Some phone documentation from the “after this.” exhibition.

Corrupt Recollection addresses themes of memory, growth, the virtual, and exhaustion in a contemporary digital age in which we are over exposed to rapid expansion and information. The world is never truly off; we are subject to constant change at all scales, our attention as a commodity is at a premium. Memories become as fleeting as the information we generate. This work approaches virtual urban sprawl and natural landscapes as though they are competing for space in real-time. How do we effectively keep track of these ever changing environments if our attention is at a constant divide? taken in Anna Leonowens Gallery by @jhill.93

Peripheral Wallpaper

A project done in August for @thirdspacegallery through @centreforarttapes

Peripheral Wallpaper is a multi-channel work featuring shifting 3D-modelled imagery using the brick aesthetic of Saint John. Viewers are encouraged to interact and be up close to the projections. Both videos include abstracted forms and references of urban arenas, moved and manipulated to explore sensory disillusion of public space. The manipulated imagery is intended to highlight our body and mind being at odds through immersive sensory engagement. Jordan challenges the idea of truth and transparency in both real and virtual subjects by utilising the intersection between digital and physical settings we engage with in our daily lives.
Through his work, Jordan is exploring the experience of habitually travelled spaces that perceptually flatten over time. In a contemporary capitalist and digital age, our attention is in constant demand, and our exhaustion is as constant as the content we consume. How does this exhaustion affect the way we navigate our everyday world? This installation investigates how empathy becomes exhausting through the unrelenting nature of an ever changing world. We lack the time and respite to be consistently present with our surroundings causing space to flatten and simplify around us. Jordan is interested in facilitating the phenomena of reactivating details and nuance that may have peripherally slipped away. What aspects of our world become a blur when we’re constantly asked to be moving and producing? By using architecture as a thematic vehicle, Peripheral Wallpaper encourages the spectator to slow down, think about, and engage with subject matter they believe has become flattened over time. taken in Saint John, New Brunswick by @jhill.93

Convergence (2021/22) - A collaboration between Omid Afarinzad, Carey Newman, and I

Catching up on posting projects. Description below:

The “tree” can be thought of as a memory or a projection of the future, but the form is contemporary, and it exists in the present. The stone represents the past and considers that the wisdom of those who came before, but is elevated upward and into the future, representing the idea that living in balance with nature is a metric that we must include in the way that we measure the wealth and health of community. The stone is chained to our past because we are the sum of our cumulative histories and cannot separate our future from our past. Our future is also shackled to the land. Industrialization has accelerated the rate at which we consume the resources of the earth, but in doing so have borrowed against the prosperity of future generations. This idea is reflected in the mound form that is inspired by an ancient traditional Iranian water reservoir called an ab anbar, that gathers water from naturally occurring aqueducts and uses elements of the earth itself to preserve water in a part of the world where it would otherwise be unavailable for large parts of a year. The thickness of the chain is symbolic of the weight of not only the histories that we carry, but also the responsibility that we have for future generations. by @jhill.93
