The best part of travelling is the people I meet!

I'm grateful to have met artists, creatives and art lovers from all over the circumpolar world during my time at the Arctic Arts Summit in Sweden!

My last day in Ubmeje/Umeå, Sweden, we rented scooters to explore the city. The city was so quiet because it was Midsomer festival! Definitely a memory to treasure 💙

As part of a group exhibition 'A River Runs Beneath,' my virtual augmented reality art piece titled 'Upinraksaq' (Spring) is on display all summer in Ubmeje/Umeå city centre by the Ume River, near Väven.

Scan the QR code to see an Inuvialuit Spring scene come to life virtually! You'll see the snow and ice, a kamotik hauling ice for "good water,' a sculptural qulliq with a warming flame, and an Inuvialuk overlooking the water and landscape, dressed in a warm atigi and snow goggles to protect her eyes from the spring sun and glare of the snow and ice.

'A River Runs Beneath" was curated by Dr. Heather Igloliorte (Inuk) and Maria Svonni (Sámi). Indigenous artists from across the North, working in various media came together for artistic incubator residencies in Canada and Sweden in 2025 and 2026 to create these original works for the Arctic Arts Summit.

Quyanainni, special thank you to the Taqsiqtuut Indigenous Research Creation Lab and Arctic Arts Summit for supporting this project and inviting me to be part of this fantastic experience in Sweden, a truly magical time working with other circumpolar and Sámi artists!

Special thank you to digital media artist Jordan Hill (T'Sou-ke Nation), our project mentor and tech support, and graphic design by Edie Skeard.

I am so honoured and excited to share that my work has been written about in Border Crossings Magazine @bordercrossings with other amazing artists Nadia Myre and Abbas Akhavan.

It was great speaking with Robert Enright and sharing the work I have been developing for the last five years. Seeing my work in print is so exciting, though the article did get some facts wrong and I would like to clarify:

The article states my grandparents lived in Grande Prairie, Alberta. This is not correct. My aunty and other family members live there, and that is who I visit yearly. This is where my homelands are, my maternal grandmother was born in High Prairie and her siblings live between Grande Prairie and Edmonton.
The article also states that my paternal grandparents owned and operated a construction company in Surrey, BC, but this was my MATERNAL grandparents. I only met my paternal grandparents a few times as they lived in New Zealand. My maternal grandparents were a constant in my life and they lived and worked in BC.

I think it’s so important for people to be able to ask for reviews before publications. I learned a valuable lesson: always ask to review the writing before agreeing to be interviewed.

The last image is of my grandparents :)

…

‘we tend to care’ is still on view at The Winnipeg Art Gallery and will be at daphne in Montreal September 2026

This work wouldn't be possible without support from Franchesca Hebert-Spence, IOTA, Norberg Hall, Anna Taylor, Kate Bourgeois, Jordan Hill, Art Gallery of Grande Prairie, The Winnipeg Art Gallery, and Urban Shaman.

Financial Support from Canada Council and Arts Nova Scotia

I am so incredibly honoured to share that I am one of the artists for the Arctic Arts Summit in Umeå, Sweden in June , 2026. Together with other Sami artists and indigenous artists from the circumpolar, we will collaborate to create site specific work that explores the meaning of being a guest to Sami land. This week we met with our Sami collaborators, which also happen to be during Sami week. This week has been pure magic. I feel so uplifted and inspired being among such incredible artists, but also such kind and good people.

Although I could not be physically present for a number of cultural functions back home, I take comfort in being an ambassador for our ancestral art form, all the way in Umeå. We may be across the oceans, but the spirit of this place feels so familiar, and the people do too.🫶🏽
