JHU CS alum Jieneng Chen, @hopkinsengineer ’26 (PhD) has been named an inaugural @scientific_american Young American Scientist, an award given to scientists whose work is poised to change the world.

Chen was awarded for his work on TransUNet, an AI tool that helps to map the boundaries of cancerous tumors while accounting for their relation to surrounding organ systems. TransUNet integrates transformers—the deep learning neural networks that power generative AI models—into biomedical image analysis. Chen has since used AI to tackle health inequities and developed the first AI model capable of diagnosing eight common cancers.

Congratulations, Dr. Chen! šŸŽ‰
