POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Packed house tonight for the @lifedesignlabjhu + @pavacenter collaborative event “Where will you thrive? Big tech vs. startups”

Thank you to @jhucompsci and @jhubme alum Aurin and Saranga for sharing your insights along with a current Pava startup founder, Avaneesh!

Such incredible insight and advice was shared from all. Students stuck around for nearly an hour after the program ended to network and connect with the panelists and each other!

Today the Pava Center led an entrepreneurship workshop for the @jhucompsci Master of Science in Security Informatics seminar series!

During the session students learned about entrepreneurship resources at @johnshopkinsu and everyone brainstormed potential solutions they could develop to address some of the biggest cyber challenges consumers, companies and the public sector face!

We hope to see some of the MSSI capstone projects turn into real businesses-there is definitely commercial potential!

Throwing it back to the Fall 2025 Fuel welcome dinner where alum from other cohorts shared their advice and recommendations for the program-which 100% paid off.

We also had a lot of fun that evening, celebrating the birthday of Saardhak, co-founder of Veina Vascular.

Some quick facts of the cohort: out of the 11 ventures, 7 went on to earn $50k BII grants from TEDCO, one became a Presidents Venture Fellow and others continue to secure wins at pitch competitions while furthering their pathways to market and profitability.

We took a stroll around the old neighborhood and met three fabulous JHU students:

From Right to Left:

Jordan, Aubrey, and Elysa.

All Juniors - Jordan and Aubrey are majoring in Molecular Biology, and Elysa in Computer Science.

A shoutout to excellence!

Think engineers can't study abroad? Think again! ✈️

This week we're busting study abroad myths for engineers with help from our program alumni.

Myth #1: "I can't study abroad in a country where I don't know the language."

Meet Shira, a CS + neuroscience double major who studied abroad in Copenhagen last semester - even though she didn't speak Danish!

🔭➡ 🔬Big data: From astronomy to #immunotherapy! Bloomberg Distinguished Professor Alex Szalay (back) helped develop the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, an astronomy project that created the most detailed 3D map of the universe.

Now, he’s applying the same big-data techniques to tackle cancer.

Szalay and School of Medicine Professor Janis Taube (front) are building AstroPath, using the same infrastructure that once stitched together billions of telescopic images—now repurposed to reveal how tumor cells interact with immune cells in extraordinary detail.

Their approach meticulously maps pathology slides and turns them into structured data. The huge, high-quality datasets can then be analyzed by AI to uncover patterns that wouldn't be possible with static images.

These insights are proving critical for understanding why immunotherapies work for some patients and not others—and how to help more people benefit.

“Across all solid tumor types, only about 30% of patients currently benefit from immunotherapies,” says Taube. “By combining spatial mapping with genomic and molecular data, we believe we can uncover how more patients can be helped.”

“This is the tip of the iceberg,” says Szalay. “We are sitting on a treasure trove, and we want to move quickly so we can identify more causes of cancer, discover new treatments, and save lives.”

Thanks to @hopkinsmedicine for the story!

With "Explainable AI" (XAI), @jhucompsci Assoc. Prof. Mathias Unberath and team are giving medical students personalized, near-real-time coaching on improving their surgical skills—not just a pass/fail score. At a time when access to expert surgeons is limited, systems like this could help fill the feedback gap.

Their paper, "Explainable AI for Automated User-specific Feedback in Surgical Skill Acquisition," was presented at the International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI).

The system analyzes a student’s hand and tool movements—such as hand rotation and thumb–finger spacing—and compares them to expert performance. Because these motion characteristics are interpretable “skill proxies” (measurable, clinically meaningful, and tied to technique), the AI can point out exactly how a student differs from experts. This enables clear, human-readable feedback instead of vague scoring.

The team conducted a first-of-its-kind study to compare XAI-driven coaching to traditional expert video demonstrations. Twelve medical students practiced suturing in a simulation task and were randomly assigned to one of the two feedback types.

After practice:
- Some trainees—especially those with more experience—improved faster with AI coaching than with video-only learning.
- Beginners still benefited, but because they were still mastering fundamentals, incorporating detailed advice was more difficult.

Next, the team plans to refine the system to make it easier to use and more broadly deployable.

"We'd like to offer computer vision and AI technology that allows someone to practice in the comfort of their home with a suturing kit and a smartphone," Unberath said. "This will help us scale up training in the medical fields. It's really about how can we use this technology to solve problems."

The CWPA Remote series returns with the fifth of the “Lost Episodes” recorded during the COVID-19 outbreak as Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Hall of Fame member George Gross, Jr., talks with former Johns Hopkins University athlete John Wilson. The video was filmed during the COVD-19 outbreak (approx. 2020).

Watch the interview at: https://youtu.be/o150cO6Ipeo

A 2002 graduate of a Masters in Engineering with specialization in Translational Medicine from the University of California-Berkeley and the University of San Francisco, Wilson's work has been involved in all areas of computer science.

A 2014 graduate of the Menlo School and a 2018 graduate of JHU with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, he has worked as a Software Engineering Intern with Genentech (June 2015-to-August 2015; June 2016-to-August 2016) and DNAnexus (June 2017-to-August 2017), a Bioinformatics Software Engineer with Personal Genome Diagnostics (August 2018-to-June 2020) and Natera (June 2020-to-April 2021), a Senior Bioinformatics Software Engineer with Personalis (April 2021-to-August 2024) and most recently an Agent Engineer for Sierra (February 2025-to-present).

During his professional career, the Hillsborough, Calif., native returned to Baltimore in 2019 to serve as an assistant for the Blue Jays' water polo program through the conclusion of the COVID-19 abbreviated 2020 campaign.

A three-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Division III All-America selection (2015, 2017: Second Team; 2016: Honorable Mention) to rate as the lone three-time All-America goalie in program history and is one of seven JHU players overall to achieve a trio of of All-America nods, Wilson is the program's all-time career (902), season (373) and game (25) saves leader.

Wilson led Hopkins to 56 wins in his career, including a pair of Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championships and runner-up finishes at both the CWPA Southern and Eastern Championships.
