Join teaching artists Vic Xu, Katelyn Lipton, and MJ Sanqui in partnership with the Northern Rhode Island Conservation District (@nricd) for a 2-day papermaking workshop using so-called invasive plants as papermaking fiber.

In this workshop, we will be creating paper with invasive plant material removed from Lawton Farm, a wetland and meadow site taken care of by Scituate Land Trust. Papermaking is a communal labor, and this workshop will bring people together to deepen relationships to plants, craft, and each other. Instead of seeing these invasive plants as problems or resources to exploit, we will explore how acts of use can become forms of care, opportunities to deepen understanding, and more thoughtful ways of managing them. Expect plant walks in which we’ll share histories of use and migration, plant removal and harvesting, and hands-on processing of the plants for paper-making.

A letter to my mother

Before you were my mother
You were a daughter
A daughter who had a daughter
And another
What if time wasn’t linear?
What if I am you
And you are me
What if we were sisters?
Growing up side by side
Your hair curls
In the same direction
As mine
Two flowers
From the same stem
You are my mother
I am your daughter

It is the biggest compliment to be told I look like my mother, to see her sparkle in my eye, and her radiance in my smile. Our ancestors are present in our very faces. As I sifted through scrap books and loose photos, I found a lot of parallels in the documentation of our childhoods. Thinking about girlhood, womanhood, motherhood, daughterhood, and I can’t help but wonder what it would have been like to grow up as sisters...

Documentation by @asimms.photo. Thank you for capturing this tender moment on mother’s day <3

I started this personal archive book in the marking time workshop with @vixixu @belinda_who @catharta__ this past winter. Featuring hanji, me and my mom’s hair, dried mugwort, and daffodiles. by @jialipton

🪷 Presenting Experience Chinatown 2026 mural: “Life Cycles in the Lotus” by Katelyn Lipton @jialipton located at Utile @utile_design at 115 Kingston St, Boston. This year, the muralists responded to the prompt, “What makes Chinatown abundant?” 🪷

Katelyn writes, “The lotus flower is a symbol of resilience. A beautiful weaving of the past, present, and future, all phases of a lotus’s life cycle are on display above the water. Blushing buds hold potential before blooming into full flowers, and they stand tall next to seed pods that hold the power to create new generations. Seeds fall back into the water, planting in the mud to start the cycle again. Children play at the gate beside elders, and the intergenerationality of Chinatown makes it feel abundant with life. This mural honors early immigrants who came before us, surviving exclusionary laws and displacement to establish roots in Chinatown. They planted seeds for future generations to bloom, and new buds are still emerging.”

Experience Chinatown is where you can discover a new take on Asian American Cultures. See, hear, create, and connect. Together, celebrate the rich cultural fabric of Boston Chinatown through free creative activities for all. #ExperienceChinatown

Live performances and activities: Saturday, September 26 from 11-3 PM (Rain date Sunday, 9/27). Murals on view now through October 18!

A girl and her gaenip 깻잎. My name is Katelyn 지아, and I am grateful to be a part of 뿌리 Roots of Sustenance, a collaborative art book project curated by @andreleebassuet.

I am an artist, farmer, and organizer exploring diasporic identity, ancestral craft, and relationship to the land through farming, printmaking, papermaking, and poetry. I was raised in the Hudson Valley of New York and am now based in Providence, Rhode Island. I think a lot about migration and belonging, and I find it beautiful how the mountains of the Hudson Valley and coastline of Rhode Island echo the landscapes of Korea. Before immigrating to the United States my family farmed in the countryside in Korea. My grandfather 할아버지 had a garden where he grew Korean vegetables, and I inherited his love of plants and growing food. I have worked on different farms across the northeast and feel inspired by people growing ancestral foods that nourish communities and build food sovereignty.

This project was inspired by time spent at @choydivision with my grandparents. It was moving to harvest gaenip 깻잎, peppers 고추, and napa cabbages 배추 alongside my grandparents, and the act of harvesting and learning to cook with these vegetables deepened my relationship to my family and our culture. My two part poem, the harvest and the recipe, is an expression of personal and collective diasporic remembering. I made monoprints of gaenip 깻잎 to document our harvest, and some of the prints will sit beside my writing. My grandfather 할아버지 passed away this past Spring while I was working on this piece, and I am honored to contribute it to Roots of Sustenance in his memory.

Deepest gratitude to @choydivison farm for inviting me and my family to your farm and for growing culturally resonant produce for our community. My gaenip is thriving in my garden this summer <3 by @jialipton

A Mother’s Embrace/A Daughter’s Embrace

Thinking about taking care of my mother, reversing the roles of caregiving, a practice of gratitude and love. How do we care for those who care for us?

Hanji with me and my mom’s hair embedded around each other, taking turns holding each other, as we do.

I had a faint idea about embedding hair into hanji after watching my hair accidentally fall into my pulp when I was pulling sheets. I liked how it swirled around with the kozo fibers. I jokingly asked my mom to start collecting her hair, and when I came to visit a couple of weeks later, she had filled a ziplock with her hair! She inspired me to follow my hairy curiosity, and I started saving my hair too. I used to grow my hair out to donate for wig making, but the last big chop I did I put it in a drawer and forgot about it…until I started making hairy paper. Perfect. by @jialipton

An attempt to find the right words, to continue our conversation, to start a new conversation
Water flows and heals and transforms, like grief

My friend taught me the word yoonseul 윤슬 on a hike early this spring. It was one of the first sunny days since the snow melted, and the sky was a clear blue. We were admiring the light sparkling on the surface of the water, how it glistened as the wind blew. I have always admired how light dances on water, it’s especially magical when it’s reflected from the moon. It seems fitting to have an untranslatable word encompass something so beautiful. Language can connect us to our shared histories and diasporas, but sometimes things are lost in translation…

My 할아버지 passed away April 6, and I’ve been imagining conversations we will never have. I paired my photography and writing alongside his, trying out a new form of talking to him. There are visible and invisible meanings woven throughout with layers of translations and unanswered questions.

Wood block Yut Nori 윷놀이 board

My family is very competitive and looooves paying yut nori. Money is always on the table and there is a lot of yelling haha. We have always hand drawn our yut nori boards, and I based the design on the board I grew up playing with that my mom drew <3

Meant to share this print for Seollal but got caught up with fire horse things, so here it is for the spring equinox! I’ll have these prints @multipleformats tomorrow by @jialipton

Cheonma Transformation

Cheonma is a mythical creature in Korean folklore who flew between heaven and Earth carrying the dead to heaven. We know horses as earthbound creatures who are strong, reliable, and hardworking often associated with manual labor and war. Cheonma are transcendent. For the year of the horse, I drew the transformation of a horse back into its winged form as a reclamation of magic and power.

This drawing started as a study of movement for my horse woodblock, but the image of cheonma entered my mind and the transformation emerged. by @jialipton

Fire Horse in Motion

February 4 marks the energetic shift from Year of the Wood Snake to Year of the Fire Horse 🐍🐎 While the snake year focused on growth, reflection, and shedding skins, this horse year embodies forward movement. Fire represents illumination and transformation, and the horse runs forward with this clarity and vision. Collectively we are recognizing and working to dismantle systems of oppression, and the energy of this year is predicted to bring accelerated change. Fuck 🧊

First carving since my injury, first woodblock animation, woodblock print and chin colé on handmade hanji
