🪷 Presenting Experience Chinatown 2026 mural: “Life Cycles in the Lotus” by Katelyn Lipton @jialipton located at Utile @utile_design at 115 Kingston St, Boston. This year, the muralists responded to the prompt, “What makes Chinatown abundant?” 🪷

Katelyn writes, “The lotus flower is a symbol of resilience. A beautiful weaving of the past, present, and future, all phases of a lotus’s life cycle are on display above the water. Blushing buds hold potential before blooming into full flowers, and they stand tall next to seed pods that hold the power to create new generations. Seeds fall back into the water, planting in the mud to start the cycle again. Children play at the gate beside elders, and the intergenerationality of Chinatown makes it feel abundant with life. This mural honors early immigrants who came before us, surviving exclusionary laws and displacement to establish roots in Chinatown. They planted seeds for future generations to bloom, and new buds are still emerging.”

Experience Chinatown is where you can discover a new take on Asian American Cultures. See, hear, create, and connect. Together, celebrate the rich cultural fabric of Boston Chinatown through free creative activities for all. #ExperienceChinatown

Hanji! Ahhhhh I just got back home in Madison and am so excited to start playing with the paper made in @hendersonpaperandbook’s class @penlandschool! I really can’t state enough how this amazing and special learning this process was with wonderful people, and I know it’s going to make its way into my work in a big way.

This process is very labor intensive and beautiful. I learned techniques that I’ll continue to use, but I also learned about Korean craft/culture. As an adoptee, the whole process holds a lot of meaning to me.

Thank you again @uw_artdept and Penland for supporting me with a partner scholarship! I am so appreciative and will be using all I learned in the pursuit of my MFA/practice.

I just spent the last 2 weeks at @penlandschool ! I took a mokuhanga workshop where I had the privilege of learning from the lovely Yoonmi Nam and had the best class experience ever where we all grew into a moku-family.

I went into Penland expecting to lock in and learn to make mokuhangas, but I came out with so much more than that. Not only did I learn a new craft, but I felt like I learned a lot about myself, healed in ways I didn’t expect, and made so many friendships that I know will last forever. I’m so grateful to have had this life changing experience being in the mountains with all of these amazing artists and incredible people I now get to call friends 🫂 I love you and will miss you all 🧡
