I had never missed Open House Lagos until the 2020 edition. The pandemic had pressed pause on a lot of art/cultural events all over the world, and a lot never really returned in a near stronger capacity until their 2022nd (read as twenty, twenty-second) edition.
So I was excited when it looked like it would be possible for me to attend this year's edition, not to then mention; the opportunity to photograph the built manifestation of two of the most important cultural projects in Lagos for the past year; Yínká Shonibare's Guest Artists Space Foundation, and the John Kosoniola Randle Centre for Yorùbá Culture and History.

G. A. S. Foundation with its mild brutalism is one of those buildings that could be a bit tricky to shoot, & I wanted to see what I would make of it with my camera this time around, and thankfully the sunlight during golden hour was in my favour.

While J. K. Randle Centre is one of those buildings that will always be 'easy' to photograph. Slap some soft sunlight on it, & you can get some instagrammable shots. Shooting it for the second time was important for me to visually contrast with my past archive. Also the interior made me feel like I was in the British Museum or Smithsonian's NMAAHC, you can find some of the interior images on SI.SA's page. A potential hub of a tourist destination for Lagosians, Yorubas, and anyone interested in Yorùbá culture or history. Being within its walls will make you understand why it is easily the important cultural/museum project in Nigeria at the moment, and should be for at least >5 years.

There's a lot that has gone into this work of a building, from the debate on restitution, to the design and architecture of it, the (colonial to post-colonial) historical backdrop of the swimming club, etc. But make I dey go abeg! 😅🏃🏿‍♀️

A few months ago, @dhkdesigns_ asked me to document an adaptive reuse project—the transformation of a house into a law office.

What began as documentation gradually became an exploration of process, negotiation, and the people who shaped the building along the way. It has been the most challenging film I've made so far, and one that wouldn't have been possible without the generosity and collaboration of many people.

I hope you find it to be more than a record of a project.

📸@jide_yeni I am a media artist telling stories about the built environment and its relationship with people. I am often preoccupied with documenting urban change, and how urban change impacts people living and working within sites of action, construction, or destruction.

My project is about the impact that the continuous effect of – building-rebuilding and destruction-construction has on the city of Lagos and on its people. Particularly as the city strives harder for its mega-city status.

For our latest feature, we spoke to media artist Ọlájídé Ayẹni, whose practice tells stories about the built environment and its relationship with people.

In our conversation, we explored how his background in architecture continues to shape his storytelling, how space and memory influence his work, and what recognition means for him.

Plain Metal Sheet Gate with Organically-Shaped Flush Handle

This was meant to be another gate for me, until I noticed the groove opening. After a bit of research I find that they are called flush handles, seemingly because the door/opening handle is not extruded but flush with the whole gate.
Moreso the flush handle looks like it might have been casted because of its organic form.

The gate is providing entry to a building that looked like a church, and is made up of 4 large metal sheets with metal fencing on its crown.
