Associative chromesthesia.
When I hear certain sounds, pitches, rhythms & more,
I receive colors, lines, shapes, textures, &
when it comes to art, it can determine what medium I use.

For example…
During a conversation, someone may have an
orange voice, calling me to use curvy lines,
expressed with crayon.

Yes - it can be THAT specific.

With this piece, the song inspired ONLY the line work.
So every line was drawn during a certain part of the song.
The colors pulled me in during a trip to the art store -
I swear they winked at me. I’d wink at me if I were them.

That’s WILD innit?!

While the meaning of this piece is deep for me, (I’ll be sharing this on Substack) not every single element is made to be deeper than what it appears to be.

Experimentation with objects, their placement, & the way I create them is an important part of the process.

So yes, sometimes I want to see a street light on a clavicle.

To be seen truly & fully in my art is what I have always wanted.

In a sense, I’ve always had that, but I wasn’t comfortable. I had a desire to control the outcome. Small mistakes were monumental, big ones ended my vision for the end of the work - this is why there aren’t many of those pieces.

My work now? Is me.
Colorful.
Secure.
Vibrant.
Blooming.
Ready to be seen.

This is one or the few photos I took through my own lense that day and possibly my favorite.

If you witnessed these pieces on display, whether we communicated or not, we met -
The pleasure was all mine.

Speaking a tiny bit on “whimsy” & why I’m painting buildings now.
This is my favorite piece of my newest works.
It looks like the page from a children’s book!
And as an author…. (yes! Me!)

…it’s quite fitting!

Painting:
“That’s all there is, there isn’t anymore.”
(I think - I still haven’t gone to check. You can acquire this piece to see for yourself though. 😏)

Art reflects life.
Introducing: my giddy girl era.
She’s pleased meet you, too.

This is the first of 8 (so far).
I giggle when I look at them.
They look related to my most recent works,
and that fact makes me happiest.

I am truly creating a satisfying, and beautiful,
body of work. One that is versatile and pleasing -
to me.

I love that these look as though they were created
by a child - that childlike whimsy is what I aim to embody in my work. Stretching the imagination.
Bringing spaces that only exist within, into the out.

So here’s piece 1:
“Feel again.”
11” x 17”
Pastel & gold leaf on paper

I ca hardly wait for you to see the one that incorporates a giraffe - you know I had to give it a shot!

Some of you have been here since the first photo: “Uma.” The very first giraffe I ever drew or painted.
I thought she’d be the last.
I’m glad I was wrong.

Swipe to see some of my giraffe pieces from over the years in order of their creation.

Did I tell you I’m glad I was wrong about Uma (which I still have) being the first and last giraffe painting?

Which one is your favorite?

I wanted this to be a post that held depth -
words I rarely use strewn together with the
beauty of cursive love notes never sent.

But alas, the free flowing thoughts that come to me in waves are far more stunning than anything I’d compose and then edit to death.

I feel out of practice -
rusty, if you will.

Oh well. Here’s a new self portrait.

Join us at The Beacon@Midtown Gallery as we host ‘SOULED OUT’, the premier solo exhibition of San Antonio Artist, Dominique Jordan. You’ve seen her art making process videos ( @pretty_girl_pour ), now come see the finished works in person.!

DJ music by @djholladizzle and poetry by @vocabulous (Andrea ‘Vocab’ Sanderson), and @poet_phetote (Phetote Mshairi), and @jihada_creating (Jihada). It will be a celebration of the creative spirit and connection! The exhibition runs through November 21st.

The Beacon at Midtown Gallery located at 1136 W. Woodlawn Ave., San Antonio, TX in the Historic Beacon Hill neighborhood.

About the Exhibition:
On November 1, 2025, Dominique Jordan will debut Souled Out, a powerful solo exhibition that explores the depth and resilience of the African American soul. Through striking, layered works of art, ‘Souled Out’ reimagines the idea of being “sold out” as an act of soulful devotion - whether to faith, to identity or to the spirit itself.

‘Souled Out’ speaks to the essence of the African American soul - resilient, creative and rooted in spirit. The exhibition honors both the beauty and the struggle of our shared experience, serving as a meditation on faith, resilience, and identity and capturing where hardship and transcendence meet.

This is my latest piece:
“Surviving the STATE of Things.”
A textured culmination of my feelings for
the things I see, read, and hear yet I
am cen$or3d???

oh.

I am still here.
My voice is still giraffe shaped.
My art is forever black.
My expression still accented with gold.

Life looks way different,
but my sweater does not.
I waited months for it.
It’s a 2 seasons old @harlemsfashionrow
piece - my FAVORITE sweater EVER.

Franklin Armstrong is king.

While it is not quite time to don
thicker clothes in the south -
today (and every day)
Imma do what I want. 😘
