525,600 minutes later 🤍

A year ago, I stepped onto a ship knowing SAS would change my life, but having no idea just how much.
I crossed the equator, oceans, and continents with my best friends. I slept under the stars in the Sahara Desert, stood in places I had only ever read about, and learned about places in class before walking off the ship and experiencing them for myself. But I also missed flights, got lost, changed plans at the last possible second, navigated places where I didn’t speak the language, figured out unfamiliar transportation, and learned very quickly that sometimes the best memories come from everything going not quite as we had planned.
Somewhere along the way, I stopped being afraid of not knowing what came next. I learned that I could land somewhere completely unfamiliar and figure it out. I learned how to communicate when words weren’t enough, how to listen before assuming I understood, and how different the world looks when you actually sit with people and hear their stories instead of learning about them from thousands of miles away. I became more independent, but I also learned how much I needed other people.
The people changed me just as much as the places did. My professors taught me lessons I still think about outside of the classroom. The crew became people I trusted and loved. The ship kids became our little siblings and the lifelong learners became our second parents. My friends became family. Five minutes of Wi-Fi meant we actually talked to each other. Sea days gave us nowhere to rush off to. For once, I was completely present in the life I was living.
SAS made me more curious. More adaptable. More willing to say yes. More comfortable being uncomfortable. It made me question things I had always accepted and realize how small my own perspective had been. It made me want to learn by being there. It made strangers feel less intimidating, unfamiliar places feel less scary, and the world feels a lot more accessible.
525,600 minutes later, SAS still shows up in who I am every single day.
A part of me will forever miss the place where I first realized just how much life I’m capable of living. 🤍🌎
