πŸ‘€ What happens when we really lookβ€”not just at what’s in front of us, but at what’s underneath… and within? I invite you to step a little closerβ€”into the way a painting comes to life. The subject may begin with horses, but it never ends thereβ€”it becomes a way of exploring what moves between the outer world and something less defined: structure, rhythm, patterns, connection. Years of drawing, observing, and working through problems shape the marks, the surfaceβ€”what some call β€œtexture.” Less a technique, more a result. 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘒π˜₯𝘰 𝘍𝘰𝘹 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘡 β€” a new painting for my upcoming solo exhibition, 𝘜𝘯𝘣𝘳π˜ͺπ˜₯𝘭𝘦π˜₯. A big shout-out to @pamela_alina, polo horsewoman extraordinaire! I met Pamela several years ago and had the pleasure of spending a day with her and her polo ponies. Later, she invited me along for a Colorado fox hunt. What a treat! Thank you, Pamela, for the wonderful inspiration! Some of it just took a few years to find its way onto canvas. πŸ˜‰ And a little Colorado twist: while we do have foxes, coyotes are plentiful on the plains, so this particular fox hunt was actually a coyote hunt! πŸ˜‰ You can see 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘒π˜₯𝘰 𝘍𝘰𝘹 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘡 at my solo exhibition, opening this Friday! JoJo Campbell and Diesel, the Campbell Ranch’s beautiful Percheron draft horse. It gave me the transparency I was after, along with some lovely texturesβ€”just without the thickness of the oil paint. This painting is based onβ€”and an extension ofβ€”an earlier one (swipe to see). But this time, I wanted to push the abstraction. You can see that especially in the details β€”and I also wanted to try oil paint on Yupo paper. Yupo⁠ is a smooth, nonporous synthetic paper made from polypropylene. It doesn’t absorb paint like traditional paper, making the surface wonderfully slippery and unpredictable. πŸ˜³πŸ˜† I initially thought I’d play with transparency, but it didn’t work out that way. Another new painting! There’s something deeply personal about a well-worn pair of chaps. They feel like a living extension of the person who wears themβ€”shaped by work, movement, weather, and time, carrying the stories of the miles traveled in themβ€”and, in this moment, dancing together. This is Walden Campbell, third generation of Campbell Cattle Co., established in 1913. This is Diesel, a beautiful Percheron draft horse from the Campbell Ranch in Wyoming. And as JoJo Campbell (@josephinnnnne) so perfectly put it, β€œThe tractors don’t always start in the winter, but the work horses always do.” The title, π‘©π’†π’Žπ’–π’”π’†π’…, came from the moment I took the reference photo. Diesel had just spent some time pulling a cartβ€”not for any practical purpose, but for the benefit of a bunch of artists with cameras. Once unharnessed, I couldn’t help but read his expression as, β€œWhat the heck? Attuned is headed to Jackson, Wyoming, for True Hands: Master Artists Render the Working Cowboy, opening September 17, 2026, at Astoria Fine Art. He was an incredible athlete with so much instinct and willingness. He went back to Three Bars and it showed.
