This whole early morning thing is pretty cool.

Truth be told, I’ve been experiencing some fairly unpleasant muscle pain issues the last while and sleeping seems to be the devil for it so up I am, feeling the sun in through the window.
That’s the Saturday report.

I have some nice music gear and I feel incredibly fortunate to have the space and the place that I do.

Many (likely most) studios have a lot more.

That said, this old (50$ on marketplace) Electro Voice reporters mic from the older days of CBC is something I use constantly.

It sounds pretty good on a lot of things and I’ve started recording my voice with it to fine results.
Is this a post about my new songs? Not quite yet but I’m getting there.

I guess the moral of this little tale is that better isn’t always better and just make music with what you have and enjoy what you’re making.

This photo from 1998 was posted today by Brian Cote and it’s a perfect moment to announce that I’m finalizing details to FINALLY have my first record, The Occasionals, release on the LP format. A small but enthusiastic re issue label will be handling this but I need your help!!
Do folks have photos from way back in those early days of us playing, hanging out, asleep on couches etc???
It was an awesome band with Peter Von Althen , Ian LeFeuvre, Tom Thompson and Darren Hore. Dave Draves would expand us and we made this first record with Bill Stunt at Sound Of One Hand.
It will be a fun gatefold release with liner notes and photos and maybe a live track or two even.
Perhaps we will gather and play all those songs too, but that’s putting the cart way out front.
Just excited to share that concept is forming into a real thing.

Had a great week here with these kids from St Catherine’s, which was recently named the 9th greatest downtown in the world or something to effect by @timeoutnewyork
Cool, quirky infectious songs and total aces to spend time with.
Thanks @arihsk.music , @amandalynparker and @markhoerdt for having some faith and making the trek.
I do fewer full projects these days but it’s a beauty thing to do. taken in Stittsville by @jimbryson

Played my last show of summer on the last night of summer. Was rewarding even if my anxiety & inside the head voice was battling me a bit.
Beautiful community happening up in Smith Falls.
Was thinking that it doesn’t take that much.
A book store
A small venue
A couple nice little local food spots and people who wanna live there and take care of each other.
Arnprior is doing the same
Almonte and Perth seem in good shape too
It’s all around us I guess, but sometimes it feels like my own town is lacking a little bit, but we’re a little more a bedroom community now vs a small town eh?
I guess that’s the Monday report.
Spending my week with some nice out of towners here helping them make some songs sound nice.

This summer my old friend Brad Crowe and I embarked on digitizing an old Ottawa music cassette compilation from 1995. It was originally compiled and produced by Thane Shubaly (see black and white photos) and featured various artists from the Ottawa music community such as Jim Bryson (Plush Finley), David Jackson (Spetter), Omar Montelongo (Alborada, Frontwards), Geoff Pye (Big Sal and the computers), John Westhaver & Co. (Resin Scraper) Mike Caffrey (Ewen Todd’s Ratboy), Brad Crowe (Alpharider), Pat Shanks (The Pencilnecks), Vanilla Pool (Eric Espig), Thane Shubaly (Biggestest, pPantalon, Frontwards), Mike Feuerstack (Snailhouse), myself (Varathane), Miche Jette (Jetboy and the Twin), Frederick Clarke (Uncle Truck), and others. He made 100 copies and to our knowledge only a few original physical cassette copies remained. We think so anyway.

We plan on recording more conversations with those who were involved and hopefully we’ll have some sort of listening party this fall in Ottawa. And then we’ll call it the end of the project.

Pretty chuffed to have this guitar here.
1971 Yamaha FG180 red label.
It was a gift for some songs I’m helping with and sweet @valhallahguitars set it up beauty and used Monel strings for a super warm sound.
Something things aren’t just things you acquire, but cherish from the get go.
Gonna strum it on some new songs I got coming up.

Did a little dash down to Montreal to @mutekmontreal to see @_fennesz revisit the glorious Endless Summer record.
Was in the excellent company of @davdjcksn , @pjromps and the international man of mystery DAG/Geddes for this little getaway. .
What a city Montreal is eh? The best.
Finished the night with a little porch listen to this golden oldie I got last week from @andrewrodgermusic in his beauty little record shop in Arnprior.

Old Kay Rhythmer into Space Echo. Sometime when I don’t play with a drummer I like to have a couple of beats to mix things up.
When I saw Dolly Parton, she used a drum machine and said “ you can laugh at my drum machine but it saves me $2500 a week”.
She also a very funny sax solo gag as she played the Benny Hill theme.
