My favorite PC card and arguably the most iconic card of its era. Griffey was my favorite player growing up and I’m convinced he’d had gone down as the GOAT if not derailed by injuries. I vividly remember my excitement receiving the raw, unsigned version on my 9th birthday, and I was almost certainly wearing a backward Mariners hat when I opened that gift. Needless to say, when I came across the perfect, signed version, I knew I had to have it. The GOAT and the ultimate champion. No card represents the peak of collecting more than this classic. Over the last year, I’ve owned and flipped 14 different copies of all different grades - from SGC 3 all the way up to this PSA 9. Just like Jordan’s championships, the next one was always the most meaningful. Forever iconic. 2008 Topps Chrome is, in my opinion, the greatest modern-era card design ever made - and easily my favorite set of all time. The Kobe and LeBron cards are the crown jewels. I’ve always loved that Topps made them cards 24 and 23 in the set - a perfect tribute to the rivalry that defined an era. Kobe’s captures the intensity and edge he brought every night, while LeBron’s immortalizes the iconic Chalk Toss that later inspired the Wingspan insert in Wemby’s Mercury set. Topps produced just seven parallels: Base, Refractor, Orange /499, XFractor /288, Gold /50, Red /5, and the Superfractor 1/1. The Golds, Reds, and Supers in PSA 10 will probably always live in fantasy land for me. Disney has always played a huge role in my life. Their ability to make wildly different experiences feel genuinely magical is unmatched. From theme parks as a kid (and even as an adult) to the visionary acquisitions of Pixar and Marvel, they almost never miss. So it’s no surprise they absolutely nailed their entry into the hobby card space. The 2023 Disney 100 release is already iconic, though it came before my time as a collector. That said, the 2024 set is the one that really hooked me. The Prizm-style design, paired with the introduction of true color parallels, sets it apart - and will likely define Disney cards moving forward. I’m still building my PC from this set (hunting PSA 10 Ariel, Eeyore, and Thumper - plus PSA 10 Red and Red/Black Mickey), but I can’t help stopping to admire these two. Few things electrify a crowd like a truly great slam dunk. No two players did more to redefine the art of dunking than Dr. J and Michael Jordan. As kids in the ’90s, we all tried to take off from the free-throw line or rock the cradle and throw one down. Vertical, dual, on-card autos of these dunking icons almost never surface. According to PSA’s population report, only two MJ/Dr. J dual autographs from this legendary SP Authentic Sign of the Times set have ever been graded - the other being a PSA 6. Kobe’s basketball brilliance was undeniable, but what always pulled me in was his iconic Mamba Mentality - that relentless grit, the obsession with outworking everyone, and the refusal to leave anything on the court except excellence. It never mattered whether he wore 24, 8, or 10… if Kobe was out there, his mission was singular: win. I’ve carried that mentality into my life, and into collecting his cards. It just feels wrong to settle for anything less than the top-tier, highest-graded versions, especially when it comes to autos.
