I have been think more about celadon of late as curator, Professor Dr Wendy Gers requested to talk about my work in this symposium at the Rijksmuseum later in the month.

Chasing the Green: Conversations about Sustainability in Contemporary Celadon.

Our conversations have not been simply about celadon and being environmentally friendly, although this is important. For me it is more about use, renewal and limits - ecologically, materially, in society, in culture and over time.

In my sculptural pots the vessel or container metaphor is an ongoing theme. Human as container but also environment as container. So the question is more, can the aesthetic language of the pot help us imagine ourselves differently within the systems that sustain us? And then how my choice of a celadon type glaze surface offers an aesthetic in which beauty emerges through relationship rather than domination, through transformation rather than permanence, and through restraint rather than excess. Rather than making work explicitly about sustainability I would like to think that I seek for sustainability to operate as an underlying aesthetic principle.

My sculptural pots offer an embodied representation of our own ecological condition — apparently separate, but in reality entirely dependent upon the larger systems that contain and sustain us.

I have finally got myself a continuous clay feeding system from @3dwasp . I have long wanted one but made do with filling individual containers for the printer. With this system you just keep adding clay as you need. Why did I not do this earlier!

In recent firings I have been testing some new clay. Up to now I have been mixing my own clay. Firstly to suite my glazes, secondly to work well with the 3D printer and thirdly to vitrify at my at my low stoneware firing temperature of 1180°C.

The new clays are @valentineclays LoStone range and the results are looking good. I've tested four from the range of six clays. Valentine's say they have developed LoStone specifically with energy reduction in mind.

While form rather than surface is my priority. The quiet, thoughtful, reflective character of the celadon glaze offers an understated beauty, enhancing the form and connecting to the natural materials and firing process that is in keeping with my intentions.

Kiln firing is rather painful in the current energy crunch - photo 1, my studio. Photo 2, when I was in China in 2024 doing the Longquan ceramic residency, two reduction kilns there were duel fuel, electricity and gas! I would like to fire with green electricity from the turbines off the Suffolk coast but keep the open flame for reduction, the gas. Does anybody know of kiln manufacturers in Europe offering dual fuel kilns?

In these drawings I am trying to work through the relationship between animal instinct and artistic intuition, where I understand intuition to be an inner, instinctive sense. An ability to process patterns and information inherited from a collective past.

As I mainly listen to instrumental music, in these drawings I am thinking about the analogue to be made between the expression and communication made by composers in sounds and then for me with visual marks.
