I am an artist potter, my work has been described as sculptural but my interests are in the expressive and communicative visual language of the pot.

Via Binarii (2019) is now part of the collection and permanent exhibition “Models from the Past for the Future” of @designmuseumgent.
Looking forward to discovering these seven teapots’ new home* this week!

“A line of makers stretching around the world from East to West. For Via Binarii, the teapot is the starting point. Drawing inspiration from the historic trade routes that delivered goods and knowledge from the exotic East, we trace the origins of the teapot, travelling from China to England, and continue this story in a contemporary age.”

Big thanks to @jkeep_artpottery @earlyamericanrobotpottery @rrael @vasfsf @emergingobjects @kammburger @the_mollylu @emrecanceramics @shlomitbauman @noamdover @itayohaly for collaborating with us on this project back in 2019 and your continuous inspiration!

Also a slightly sad moment: saying goodbye to ‘Artefacts of a New History’ and ‘Skafaldo Bowl’, who were Unfold’s ambassadors in the previous permanent exhibition and will now take a step back into the archives.

$I only got as far as Swindon on the night ‘Subversive Forms’ opened at Chippenham Museum and took a day trip once the weather had settled. So lucky to get a chance for a closer look at the exhibition, and to learn more about the transition of objects into the world and how we understand them. What the works in this show have in common is clay and their makers’ deep understanding of the medium. Mimi Joung has made clay her language that crosses cultures and disciplines, addressing social and political issues too complex for words. I enjoyed Jonathan Keep’s mini lecture on his anthropological approach to pottery informed by growing up in Apartheid South Africa, of translating traditional processes into algorithms. I will definitely read up on African fractals. Nicholas Lees’ works also share attributes with geometry, allowing him to present form as negative space. Everything is meticulously planned for intense craft to appear as a void. I was fascinated to learn that Patricia Volk’s undulating forms are a lot less planned and intuitively come into being down to the pieces telling the artist what colour they are. My favourite quote of the day was Felicity Aylieff’s references to the ‘contained turbulence’ in her monumental orbs. There's definitely something alluring in imagining the unseen. Thank you to Sarah Purvey for bringing together such an exciting and diverse selection of works and for the symposium panel for sharing a glimpse behind the scenes and stories of the failures that are never seen. The last slide is of Sarah's own work which followed me on a recent family visit. Parts of my soul tend to stay behind in London and the gaps in shared memories are increasing. Beautifully captured in her Gathering.$
