Distant Relative #18 is part of my ongoing series Distant Relatives, which explores ancestry through imagined connections to figures from another era. This portrait begins with the possibility that the individual depicted might somehow be related to my own family, collapsing the distance between personal history and collective memory.

The absence becomes a metaphor for a Staten Island burial ground that was paved over, where the physical traces of those buried there have been obscured by development.

Through this act of removal, Distant Relative #18 considers the relationship between memory and disappearance, asking what remains of a person, a family, or a history when the places that hold those memories are erased.

It is an honor to participate in this exhibition and project. The opening marks the end of filming of upcoming documentary “American Graveyard” to released in 2027.

In order of appearance a few of the amazing artists featured in the exhibition.

“Distant relative # 18” 2026, 59”x59” oil on linen. Will be featured in a very moving and important documentary entitled “American Graveyard”.

In the 1950s, Cherry Lane Cemetery—a 19th-century Black burial ground on Staten Island—was paved over for commercial development and erased from public memory.

American Graveyard is a documentary about the effort to recover Cherry Lane’s history. With few surviving photos or illustrations, the film faced a critical challenge: how do you tell this story when most of the visuals are maps and deeds? In response, artists across disciplines created new work inspired by Cherry Lane, the people buried there, and their descendants. The result is Black Cherry Lane: Presence, opening October 1.

Over the past year, the artists have also been documented creating their own responses to Cherry Lane, and the exhibition’s opening will form the ending of American Graveyard, making the artists and their work a crucial part of the entire film.

📍 Location: Empire Outlets, Staten Island
🗓 Dates: October 1–25, 2026

Happy birthday to Jerome Lagarrigue! 🎉 (@jlagarrigue)

Born in Paris to a French father and an African American mother, Lagarrigue moved to the U.S. in 1992 and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1996.

Since then his figurative paintings have taken him everywhere from a solo exhibition at the Villa Medici in Rome to collaborations with Maya Angelou, the Metropolitan Opera, and George Lucas.

His work lives in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Torrance Art Museum, and is part of the traveling exhibition “Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys.”

We’re grateful to work with an artist whose paintings move so fluidly between the tangible and the intangible. Wishing Jerome a wonderful year ahead and to continue to support his excellence!

I’ve been painting civil unrest for more than a decade now: riot police, protesters, bodies and power colliding on the streets of cities across the globe. Originally entitled The Tipping Point, each protest imagery is a freeze-frame of a confrontation, a mêlée.

The Riot Within is a new limited edition, signed on archival cotton paper that brings my body of work to a broader public for the first time. This limited series takes its name from two simultaneous truths: the uprisings playing out in cities across the globe, still today; and the private and human upheavals of a life in motion — loss, grief, change, dislocation and revolt. We’ve all been there, experienced it in one form or another, with varying levels of intensity and impact.

This series is produced from the original oil paintings and are strictly limited, hand-signed editions - intended to be owned by those who are moved, who want to keep something permanent of this reckoning in their lives - acknowledge it and admire it.

For more information and to order, visit www.theriotwithin.com. Current editions in the series include The Arrest, Thrower IV, Night Thrower, Aesthetic of a Melee, Flesh & Water, and The Colossus.

Best,

Jérôme by @jlagarrigue
