“The Origin of My Descent: Beyond the Grave”, is one of several multidisciplinary artworks created by artists honoring Cherry Lane Cemetery. The exhibition is a sequel to Heather Quinlan’s documentary, American Graveyard.
The exhibition “Presence”, runs Oct. 1-Oct. 25, 2026. Thank you @lazarusnazario Nazario for bringing artists together on this creative platform showing how art can shape the world and be an advocate for challenging social norms. Thank you to my artist friend, @timokamura for inviting me to be a part of this thought provoking project. It’s dear to my heart because I have gained so much insight and a sense of belonging studying my family’s graves. A special thanks to the Prine descendants for welcoming us into their family. This #MotivationMonday is extra special because Angelina (@linadarrisaw) invited us into her home for an exclusive tour. As a fifth-generation Brooklynite, founder of @csuitecoach, fashionista, and OG BLK and Homie, it’s only right that her home is just as fabulous as she is.

Her two-story Brooklyn home is full of personality, with a standout collection of Black art that feels as personal as it is beautiful. For Lina, the pieces on her walls hold memories of the people she loves. One takes her back to her mother braiding her hair, while a commissioned portrait by Brooklyn-based artist @jlagarrigue honors her two great-grandmothers. Her collection also includes a James Baldwin print by another Brooklyn-based artist @khaliftahir, alongside works by emerging artists she continues to discover and collect. And as a fashion girlie, her love of @schiaparelli even shows up in her candlesticks.

A lovely visit from my friend, the writer @lizzieskurnick and her NYU students! She brought them on a field trip to BLACK CHERRY LANE: PRESENCE as part of their course, “Writing Family History: Memoir, Storytelling, and the Art of the Personal.” Heather Quinlan, director of AMERICAN GRAVEYARD gave the class an excellent primer on the film and each unique work in the corresponding exhibition, including Thomas Doyle’s miniature, “Ascension” and Beverly Y. Smith’s quilt, “The Origin of My Descent: Beyond the Grave.” We even tucked away into the listening room together to experience my sound installation, “What Remains,” turning the tiny minimalist theater into a confessional.

We’re at the halfway mark, and would love to have you stop by the gallery with a class, a friend or family before we close. The exhibition runs through Sunday 10/25 with two remaining programs: Common Ground (with Debbie-Ann Paige, Public Historian) on Sunday 10/18 at 2PM, and AMERICAN GRAVEYARD New Footage Screening (with Heather Quinlan, Director) on Friday 10/23 at 6:30PM

The exhibition and programs are all FREE and open to the Public.

AMERICAN GRAVEYARD director Heather Quinlan gave an insightful interview about the documentary and its artistic companion, BLACK CHERRY LANE: PRESENCE. The multimedia exhibition, running through 10/25 in a pop-up gallery/film set at Empire Outlets on Staten Island, responds to the paving over of a 19th Century Black cemetery and churchyard. What was once a center of Black life on Staten Island is now a strip mall. Through nine distinctive artworks which will be part of the film, the site has been reimagined, honored and back in public conversation.

Still reflecting on an extraordinary evening in New York.

Art of the Covenant at Phillips New York brought together contemporary African and African diasporic art, philanthropy, culture, and community in one room.

It was a powerful reminder that art does more than reflect culture. It preserves stories, creates connection, and can become a vehicle for collective impact.

I was especially proud to experience the evening through my work with the Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund (EDTF), one of the beneficiary organizations of this remarkable initiative.

There is something powerful about seeing philanthropy move beyond the traditional spaces where we expect to find it. Sometimes it looks like a campaign or a gala. Sometimes it looks like people gathering around extraordinary art, shared identity, and a belief in what is possible when we invest in one another.

Grateful to the artists, curators, partners, collectors, and community who made Art of the Covenant such a meaningful experience.

A beautiful night at the intersection of art, culture, philanthropy, and collective impact.

Last night, I got to attend the opening of the art exhibit "Black Cherry Lane: Presence", at the Empire Outlets center in Staten Island.

This show is a companion piece to Heather Quinlan's upcoming documentary film "American Graveyard", about Cherry Lane Cemetery— a former African-American burial ground that is now a strip mall in Staten Island.

I didn't take many photos, but I did snap this shot of Ruth Ann Hills and David Thomas, posing in front of a painting which shows them holding the photo of their great-great-grandfather Benjamin Prine, one of the island's original residents. (A few minutes later, the artist, @timokamura, gifted them the painting.)

The exhibit @blackcherrylane runs through Oct. 25th, at Empire Outlets, 55 Richmond Terrace, five minutes from the ferry.

Please join us tonight, October 1st at 6:30 PM, for the opening night of "Black Cherry Lane: Presence."

This exhibition honors the lives, legacy, and enduring presence of Cherry Lane Cemetery—a 19th-century Black burial ground erased by urban development. Nine artists spent the past year creating work in response to its erasure and rediscovery. Their creative process was documented in the film "American Graveyard," which will be released next year in conjunction with the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in New York State. The opening will serve as the final chapter of the documentary.

👉Staten Island Exhibition, tomorrow night October 1st. 6.30-9.30pm.
Everyone is welcome to attend the opening… This is a very important group exhibition which shines a light on the tragic story of a historic African-American church and cemetery in Cherry Lane, Staten Island which was PAVED OVER and buried under a commercial property. Myself and many significant artists such as @quiltbev @tahaclayton @jlagarrigue @thomasdoyleart and more were asked to bring our artistic vision to the project in an effort to bring this story to the attention of the public.

We will also be filming the final scenes for the corresponding documentary @americangraveyardmovie which investigates the history of Cherry Lane and Sandy Ground in detail.

This is a pop-up exhibition, located about 5 minutes from the Staten Island Ferry. Details on the invitation. Hope to see you there ! 🙏✨

MEET THE ARTIST:
JEROME LAGARRIGUE

Originally from Paris and now based in Brooklyn, @jlagarrigue is an award-winning painter whose expressive portraits explore identity and memory.

For Black Cherry Lane: Presence, Jerome created Distant Relative # 18, a monumental oil painting from his ongoing series exploring ancestry through imagined connections from another era.

By deliberately erasing part of the figure, Jerome evokes the disappearance of Cherry Lane Cemetery, where development obscured the physical traces of those buried there.
