Since my return from Nigeria, I have been struggling to find the words to express the peace that Ifa has brought to my life.
However, who I am and what I have been called to do, is crystal clear.
To those who have walked this path with me, guiding and encouraging this once broken human, thank you and I love you. by @jlbrickhouse

🎤🤝👟 PASS THE MIC: Codes, Cultures & Ways of Being // Thur. 10/8 @ 7pm 👟🤝🎤

-A Community Town Hall-

Every groove, every style, and every rule we follow in the circle was handed to us by somebody who carried it before we got here. As our scenes grow and our eyes turn toward the present and the future, it's worth pausing together to talk about where each of our cultures comes from and the principles that made us who we are. Those principles are more than history. They are ways of being, and when we understand them, they keep us aligned with our own traditions, with each other, and with the people who opened the door for us.

Pass the Mic brings crew leaders and members from across the DMV's many dance communities into that conversation. This isn't a battle and it isn't a showcase. It's a real dialogue about history, community, respect, and identity, where each culture can speak for itself, and where we can talk honestly about what's been passed down, what's being challenged, and what's being reinvented.

That’s House. True School Jam Sessions. Monday nights, 10 PM until close, at Urban Artistry Dance Academy in Silver Spring. Free and open to all.

We love this music and we love this culture. And we know that loving it means more than just showing up to dance. Sometimes it means setting time aside to seriously think about what we’re practicing, to work on making ourselves better and our communities better.

That’s what these sessions are for. Some nights we’ll have DJs join us, local, national, and international. Some nights we’ll build around a theme or a topic. Every night there’s room for the get down, room for questions, room to review footage, work on your DJing, or just sit and talk with people who care about this culture the way you do.

Whether you’re brand new to this or deep in it, there’s a place for you here. Send us a message, let us know what you’re working on, and come through.

If You Love House Music And Dance Culture, Let’s Be About It, Together.

>>> THE DOOR NEVER SHUTS <<<

A candid exchange about teaching as a lifelong obligation; how we pass culture forward without ever closing the door behind us.

Two tradition bearers sit down for an honest conversation about what it really means to teach this work. Not the mechanics of a class or the steps on a count, but the responsibility that comes with putting culture into someone else's hands.

Teaching movement is one thing; teaching a tradition asks more of you, because a tradition carries accountability, to the people who came before and to the ones still coming up. That responsibility does not end when a class does. It follows the trends that move the ground beneath us, the pull to chase what the scene rewards, and the real cost of watering something down just to keep pace. And it lives in the kind of mentorship that has no time limit and no exit, where the door never shuts behind a student, because passing culture forward is not a transaction; it is a relationship you carry for as long as you both are in it.

This is a conversation for teachers, students, and anyone who has ever wondered what they owe the thing that shaped them.

I tend to work quietly. I don't say much about what I'm doing online because the work has always felt like enough on its own, and the people I do it for have always been reason enough.
But every so often, something breaks that silence, not with noise, but with recognition. @rockforcecrew a crew whose name carries weight wherever Hip Hop culture lives, placed an appreciation award in my hands, and I'll admit it moved something in me I had kept to myself for a long while:
To be seen is no small thing. To be seen by people who understand the labor, who have bent toward their own work with that same devotion, who have built something true and lasting over the years, that is a grace I wasn't looking for, and it found me anyway.
So let me say it plainly, the way gratitude ought to be said. Thank you, Rock Force Crew, past and present.
The respect runs both ways, and it always has. Keep building, keep loving the work, and I'll see you soon. Hopefully, catch'n wreck inside a cypher somewhere.
Until then, friends, I wish you peace & and purpose! by @jlbrickhouse

>>> THE WORKING ARTIST: CAREER, CULTURE, AND BALANCE <<<

Do you have to choose between being an artist and building a career in something else?

Junious Brickhouse and Rizqi Rachmat don't think so, and they are living proof. You can be an educator, a doctor, a lawyer, or anything in between, and still live fully inside Hip Hop and street dance culture.

This session is an honest conversation about what it means to call yourself an artist, what it means to be a working professional, and how to carry both without losing yourself in either. Junious and Rizqi will share their own paths and sit with you in the questions that matter most: Am I an artist? Do I want this to be my livelihood, or is it the culture I love and live? And if my life runs through another career entirely, how do I find the balance?

As the first workshop in Urban Artistry's PDSE, this is a space to think honestly about the life you want, and how to sustain it on your own terms.

Thankful for a beautiful time at the @dance_circle_charlotte 3rd Anniversary over the weekend! The opportunity to represent @urbanartistrydc @thats_house @poseandparlay was amazing, esp during such turbulent times.

The Charlotte scene is so 🔥 *Everyone* was dancing in that room. We left super inspired and in gratitude.

Congrats to the cypher winners @q_unfolded25 and @kingrawknee ⚡️⚡️⚡️

Thank you @steve_howerton_ for the warm hospitality! And thank you @coflothesoulshifter @djpaulhoward @steve_howerton_ for keeping us inspired on the dancefloor! 💎💎💎

So great to reconnect with @breakinginertia and @henrymilton2977 and others, and meet so many new souls!

This is what collaboration and being in community looks like. Looking forward to next time 🙌

...speaking of collaborations... Join us this Saturday (and every last Sat of the month) at ESL for @elements_of_house_ with @djpaulhoward @philippe_the_haitian !! Prepare to sweat 💦
