POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Just one week until the 138th Annual Meeting of the @americanfolkloresociety , this year, in downtown Asheville, North Carolina!

I’m still going through the incredible program sessions being led by friends across the field, bringing together scholarship, community practice, and cultural activism.

From conversations on surviving Hurricane Helene, folklore research and social justice advocacy, Appalachian community persistence, foodways as expressions of identity, collaborations with local chefs and communities.

I’m especially excited that colleagues @queensgirlmagic Naomi Sturm and @jlbrickhouse Junious Brickhouse will join the brilliant Sikh educator, activist, and musician @iamsonnysingh Sonny Singh for a workshop exploring chardi kala, the Sikh concept of radical optimism, on how we might move toward collective imagination, and transformative action.

Other sessions explore LGBTQI+ placemaking in Appalachia, Black Appalachian storytelling at the YMI Cultural Center, safeguarding refugee cultural heritage, Kurdish cultural persistence, and joy as resistance through Balkan Romani music and dance and more.

This year is particularly meaningful as it marks my final year serving on the AFS Executive Board. It’s been such an honor to serve one of the nation’s oldest cultural institutions, bringing together hundreds of folklorists, scholars, artists, and cultural changemakers.

This year, I’ll get to help facilitate the closing Daniel Crowley Storytelling Dialogue and Concert, featuring two exceptional storytelling artists, @mssheila_storyteller Sheila Arnold and @wvteller Adam Booth.

The concert will reflect on this year’s theme, Community Persistence, Reckoning with Change, Imagining Futures, storytelling as a living practice of truth-telling, justice, and healing. How stories help surface hidden histories, build trust and imagine more just futures.

Grateful to the many local partners, AFS organizing team and everyone helping welcome this gathering to our mountain region.

See y’all in Asheville! 🙏🏾❤️🌈 #afs2026 #asheville #storiesmatter

In Freestyle Fundamentals we’ve been working on call outs and exchanges to multiple genres of music.

Here we’re exchanging 1-minute rounds, 2 rounds each, focusing on spatial awareness and storytelling. These two skills are important to sharpen to elevate your freestyle, especially when you have only 1 minute to make an impact…which is often the case in competitions.

Come join us every Monday from 8:30-10pm for the Freestyle Fundamentals class @urbanartistrydc to sharpen your freestyle tools and more!

🎤🤝👟 PASS THE MIC: Codes, Cultures & Ways of Being // Thur. 10/8 @ 7pm 👟🤝🎤

-A Community Town Hall-

Every groove, every style, and every rule we follow in the circle was handed to us by somebody who carried it before we got here. As our scenes grow and our eyes turn toward the present and the future, it's worth pausing together to talk about where each of our cultures comes from and the principles that made us who we are. Those principles are more than history. They are ways of being, and when we understand them, they keep us aligned with our own traditions, with each other, and with the people who opened the door for us.

Pass the Mic brings crew leaders and members from across the DMV's many dance communities into that conversation. This isn't a battle and it isn't a showcase. It's a real dialogue about history, community, respect, and identity, where each culture can speak for itself, and where we can talk honestly about what's been passed down, what's being challenged, and what's being reinvented.

📆 Thur. 10/8 @ 7-10 pm

🎤 Moderator: Junious Brickhouse (Assassins Crew)

👤 Panelists:
Booda Monk (LBX [Lead By Xample])
Brent Talley (Natural Elements Crew)

10 days went by like a dream…

And on October 1st, Day 10 of the Next Level Workshop in Ho Chi Minh City wrapped up in the most complete way possible.

The final leg of this journey was more than just music and visual elements, it was a space for all of us to gather and expand our minds around creative entrepreneurship. Led by Hà Lê, the main talk brought so many grounded, real-world perspectives to the table before each class Breaking, Graffiti, MC/Rap, and Beat Making, split off for deeper, genre-specific discussions on their individual paths forward.

The most emotional moment was handing out the official certificates from the U.S. Consulate General HCMC to every single student. Behind that piece of paper was a week and a half of pure effort, continuous learning, and unconditional passion.

PUSW Studios is genuinely proud to be part of this movement. Thank you to everyone who helped create a space where knowledge, culture, and deep connections could thrive. We found a shared touchpoint on our Hip Hop journey, and there’s no doubt that the path ahead for each of us will go even further!

Peace & One Love

That's a wrap on the first ever 7 TO LIVE. 🎙️

Congratulations to our winners, @visionofa_king (House Dance) and @finesse.36 (FlexN), who both put an incredible showing on the floor. DEZ with the longest win streak and Finesse who fought all the way to the end to secure it after a 3-way tie with @aaronwilliams536 and @this__flow in the second round.

At the core of it all, the chemistry of the LayeRhythm band @simsonkeys, @bassedonpeter_, @axeltoscaofficial, @d_frazier, @gvthdrmmrsm, and @sconer_owner, who brought a whole new dimension to the battle.

A big thank you to @maroonwaters for holding it down as our host, and to @donis.bk for opening the night and keeping us high.

Thank you to everyone who came out and made this first edition what it was. More to come.

Full album is free to download, and share your experience in our survey both at the link in bio.

Something really beautiful happened, and I’m still letting it settle into my heart. Urban Artistry invited me to become a member. Not just to show up. But to become part of the family. 🥹❤️ And I didn’t receive that invitation alone. I was invited alongside my darling friend, my dance partner, my peer, Ray. ✨
To be welcomed into a space where people see you, believe in you, and genuinely want to see you grow — and to experience that moment alongside someone I admire, love and trust — meant so much to me.
I came looking for a class, a community. I found a home.

Thank you, @urbanartistrydc and @jlbrickhouse for seeing us, welcoming us, holding space for us and reminding us that art can create family in the most unexpected ways.
And now, we get to celebrate by doing what I love most:
SINGING. 🎶
This Saturday, October 3, SING DC is helping kick off the International Soul Society Festival with SING WHEATON from 2–3 PM at Urban Artistry.

Come sing with us.
Bring your people.
Bring your whole self.

No auditions. No experience necessary.
Just music, harmony, movement, and good people.

Come raise the vibes with us. ✨

Noah “inoachumean” is from Lahaina, Hawaii and has been dancing since 2009. He started skating in 2017 and that has been another fun, creative, and freeing outlet for him outside of dancing. Noah has been playing table tennis since he was 12 and won an event at the 2015 Table Tennis US open in Las Vegas when he was 18. Noah opened a small dance studio on Maui from 2019-2021 and called it “The Break Spot” which later became the growing hub for Maui dancers, offering private lessons, free classes and open sessions every week. Noah opened his own table tennis club 2022-2023, where “The Break Spot” sessions continued. Since losing the club to the Lahaina fire, Noah restarted “The Break Spot” free weekly programming in Lahaina, and moved forward continuing to pursue the creative path of acting/dancing. At the end of 2025, Noah started content creating along the lines of comedy/skits and it blew up for him. He has been continuing to build and grow that in pursuit of more professional projects/gigs for acting.

MEMPHIS JOOKIN WORKSHOP // Sun.10/11 4:30-6:30pm

We are excited to have Dr. Rico teach a Memphis Jookin Workshop at Urban Artistry for @soulsocietyfest!

Come catch the feeling of Memphis Jookin. We’ll get into the footwork, bounce, and musicality that make this dance move the way it does. I’ll break down the foundations, show you how the steps connect, and give you room to add your own flavor. You don’t have to come in knowing how to dance. Just bring some energy, stay open, and let the music move you.

In the workshop, we’ll:

- Break down the foundations and signature footwork of Memphis Jookin.
- Find the bounce, rhythm, and musicality in the movement.
- Connect steps with glides, turns, and transitions.
Make room for freestyle, personality, and your own style.
- Talk about the Memphis roots and culture behind the dance.
- Move together, have fun, and leave with something you can keep building on.

Urban Artistry Dance Academy: 11301 Georgia Ave.- 2nd FI. (entrance on Price Ave.) @urbanartistrydc @wheaton_md

Entry: $40 ($70 for 2 Workshops on 10/11)

DR. RICO FLAKE
Memphis Jookin artist, choreographer, educator, and culture bearer

I’m Marico “Dr. Rico” Flake, born and raised in Memphis, where Jookin is part of how we move, create, and tell our stories. I’ve spent more than 25 years dancing, teaching, performing, and helping carry Memphis Jookin to audiences around the world.

I’m the founder of G-Force, one of the first organized Memphis Jookin crews, and a co-founder of UDig Dance Academy, an early school dedicated to teaching the style. My work has taken me to the stages of So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars, where I worked with Janelle Monáe on “Tightrope.” I also served as lead choreographer and star of Memphis Jookin: The Show, and have performed with artists and organizations including the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and the Memphis Grizzlies. (Bio cont. in comments.)
