POSTCARD FROM MEMPHIS 📍
One month in Memphis.
New streets. New sounds. New faces. A guitar that’s been getting a workout. A few wrong turns, a few unexpected doors opening, and a whole lot of reasons to believe I’m right where I need to be.
I came here chasing a feeling, carrying a suitcase, a guitar, and a collection of songs called California King.
Somewhere along the way, the story started writing itself.
To everyone who’s been listening, watching, reaching out, and coming along for the ride—thank you. Every comment, every conversation, every new connection reminds me that the best part of the journey is the people you meet along the way.
California was the beginning. Memphis is the next chapter.
And we're just getting warmed up.

Memphis is raining today.

Not a polite little drizzle.

The kind of rain that comes down hard and turns the streets black and shiny. Neon bleeding across the pavement. Tires hissing through the gutters.

Everything feels slower.

Heavier.

Greasier.

Like a slide guitar hunting for the backbeat.

And maybe that’s where I am right now.

Somewhere between what I left behind and whatever comes next.

You can’t see very far through the rain.

You just keep moving.

Headlights on.
Wipers working.
One hand on the wheel.

Trusting the road.

**California King.
In Memphis.**

Sometimes you have to get a little wet to find out where you’re going.

There’s a scene in *The Matrix Reloaded* that I keep thinking about.

The **Nebuchadnezzar** is trying to make it back to Zion.

The ship is damaged.
The crew is exhausted.
The systems are failing.
They’re deep underground, surrounded by darkness.

And they don’t know if they’re going to make it.

I think I understand that feeling a little better now.

I’m in Memphis.

But I’m not really *there* yet.

California is behind me.
The life I knew is behind me.
The person I was when I left is behind me.

And whatever comes next?

I can see pieces of it.

But I can’t see the whole thing.

There are days when the road feels wide open.

And there are days when it feels like I’m crawling through an underground tunnel with just enough power left to keep the lights on.

That’s the strange thing about following your intuition.

People see the decision.

They don’t always see the liminal space that comes afterward.

The part where you’ve left one world but haven’t completely arrived in the next.

The part where you wonder:

**What if I was wrong?**

What if this doesn’t work?

What if I don’t make it?

But then something happens.

A song gets played on the radio.

You meet a musician who feels like an old friend.

Someone opens a door.

A stranger becomes part of the story.

And suddenly the lights come back on for a second.

I came to Memphis because something in me said **go.**

Even when I don’t know exactly what happens next.

Maybe it’s what you build in the darkness while you’re finding your way there.

I didn’t come here to make a choice , the choice was already made. I came to find out why.

The ship is still moving.

Sometimes you take the next step before you know where it’s going to lead.

You just know you’re supposed to take it.

That’s been the story behind **California King** from the beginning. True story.

**“Where We Belong.”** takes place on the mother road.

And now that song has found its way onto **Route 66 Radio.** 🚗🎸

That means a lot to me—not just because another radio station is playing the song, but because it feels like another piece of the story falling into place.

There’s something that happens when you start moving toward the thing you believe in.

You meet the right people.
You find the right rooms.
You hear the right song at the right time.
A door opens where you didn’t expect one.

You can’t always see the whole road.

Sometimes you just have to trust your intuition, put your foot on the gas, and go.

Maybe that’s what **“Where We Belong”** is really about.

Not finding some perfect destination.

**Following the feeling that tells you you’re headed in the right direction.**

One song.
One mile.
One person at a time.

**It takes a team to make a song come alive.**

*Where We Belong* may have started with one person and a guitar, but it took a whole lot of people to get it here.

Musicians who showed up and played their hearts out.

People behind the microphones, the mixing boards, the cameras and the scenes.

Friends who listened to early versions when the song was still trying to figure out what it wanted to be.

Family who believed in me through every version of the story.

And all the people who kept showing up along the way.

Some of you were there when the first notes were written.

Some joined somewhere in the middle.

And some of you are just discovering the song now.

But that’s the beautiful thing about a story like this.

It keeps unfolding.

So today, I’m raising a glass to everyone who lived this story with me as it happened—and to everyone who is still part of where it’s going.

From California to Memphis.
From old memories to new beginnings.
From one song to whatever comes next.

**Friends and family first. Always.**

No matter where we are on the planet.

Because maybe that’s the real meaning of *Where We Belong*.

We belong wherever our people are.

**The morning after.**

Yesterday, *Where We Belong* finally went public.

Three years of writing it.
Rewriting it.
Recording it.
Mixing it.
Remixing it.
Wondering if it was finished.
Wondering if I was finished.

And then, suddenly… it was yours.

Today I woke up in a new city carrying a song that began in an entirely different chapter of my life.

That feels strange.

And beautiful.

There’s a little nostalgia for everything that came before—the rooms where these songs were written, the people who helped bring them to life, the versions of myself that existed somewhere along the way.

But there’s also something else.

Renewal.

That feeling you get when you realize the thing you’ve been working toward actually happened… and instead of an ending, it feels like the beginning of something.

I’m proud of this song.

But mostly, I’m grateful.

Grateful for the people who listened before it was finished.
Grateful for the musicians who gave it life.
Grateful for everyone who encouraged me to keep going.
Grateful for the people listening today.

And grateful that somehow, after all these years, this song found its way out into the world at exactly the moment I found my way to a new one.

Yesterday was about releasing the song.

Today is about listening to where it takes us.

One of the strange things about starting over somewhere new is realizing how quickly a city can start feeling a little less unfamiliar.

This week, I started finding my people.

Artists. Musicians. Makers. Photographers. Dreamers. People who are creating thei Memphis mythology

The Cooper-Young art scene has that kind of energy.

You stepped onto the porch not knowing anyone and somehow end up talking about music, making art, old records, new ideas and where all of this might lead.

That’s the part nobody tells you about moving somewhere new.

You think you’re searching for a place.

But really, you’re searching for **your people.**

And maybe that’s what *Where We Belong* has been trying to tell me all along.

Belonging isn’t something you find on a map.

Sometimes it’s a conversation.

Sometimes it’s a song.

Sometimes it’s a new friend who makes a new city feel a little more like home.

I’m only a week into this chapter.

But I think I’m starting to find my way.

**One week in Memphis.**

My first night here, my gear hadn’t arrived yet.

So I slept on the floor.

Everything slopes southwest on Linden Street, but I found the most level piece of the apartment and laid down to rest. My shirt was my mattress. My backpack was my pillow.

At midnight it was still pushing 80 degrees and the humidity had me dripping with sweat.

But it was my new home.

And somehow, that made the hard landing feel a little softer.

The next morning Memphis was an oven under the sun. I walked down Madison Avenue feeling like the soles of my shoes were melting into the pavement.

Shade tree to shade tree.

Air conditioning to air conditioning.

Until I found **Zinny’s**.

And that’s where this story starts getting interesting.

Zinny’s is the kind of place where Memphis stays up until dawn. Where the strange is normal. Where you can walk in not knowing anybody and walk out feeling like you’ve been there forever.

I’m already writing a song about it.

Maybe someday I’ll get a chance to play it there.

For now, I’m just listening.

One week down.

A whole new chapter ahead.

**Memphis, I think we’re going to get along just fine.**

**IT’S OFFICIAL. 🎉**

*Where We Belong* has officially been cleared for distribution.

Which means this little song that started as an idea, became a demo, found its way into the studio, and grew into a full-blown record is now headed out into the world.

**September 21.**

But before it arrives everywhere, there’s still a little story left to tell.

And if you want to be part of that story from the beginning, **join the California King Society.**

Society members get the music, demos, stories, behind-the-scenes moments and road notes **before everyone else.**

Because this isn’t just about releasing a record.

It’s about where the songs take us.

**Have you heard the demo yet?**

Before *Where We Belong* became a finished record, it was just an idea.

A guitar.
A melody.
A few words scribbled down.
And that feeling that maybe I was onto something.

Then the song started finding its way.

The demo became a recording.
The recording became a track.
The track found its rhythm.
Musicians added their parts.
JP Hesser helped shape the sound at Castaway Studios.
And somewhere along the way, the little idea I started with became something much bigger than I imagined.

That’s one of the things I love about making music.

You never really know what a song is going to become when you first hear it.
