Following Family Weekend, we want to highlight the Family Studies minor here at CHBS! Take a peek into the FAM 400 class that prepares students for their research and capstone project, while focusing on Family Ecology and/or Gerontology.

“No matter what type of population you want to work with, children or older people, we all come from a family, and we all are products of our family dynamics. So, it’s really important to understand what those family dynamics are and why it can help you understand why people respond or act a certain way.” - Student in FAM 400

Sophia Pimenta (not depicted), a junior psychology major, said. “I think Family Studies is important because it allows students to gain more experience and knowledge about their future careers. As a psychology major, it has been very beneficial to have a minor that keeps me more educated on current issues as well as being able to help the community around me.”

“I feel like the family studies minor just gives you more opportunities to get more targeted education on populations that you want to work with in the future.” - Student in FAM 400

The Family Studies minor is open to all majors and all colleges at JMU, and offers concentrations in Family Ecology and/or Gerontology! Photo of students at a table. by @jmuchbs

Behind every CHBS student is a story.

A family who encouraged the dream.
A friend who listened after a long day.
A professor who pushed a little further.
A campus that became home.

This Family Weekend, we’re bringing all these things together and celebrating the moments that make being a Duke feel like so much more than a college experience.

Welcome, families! We're glad you're here! Photo of two students in front of the HBS building. by @jmuchbs

Three world records. One JMU Psychology student.

At just 19, JMU sophomore and powerlifter Mikayla Dolina made her mark at the 2026 Tested Ultra Nationals, taking first place in her division and setting three USPA world records, including a 348-pound squat and a 400-pound deadlift.

But her story goes beyond the numbers. After four years in the sport, Mikayla says powerlifting has taught her discipline, resilience and how to trust herself, lessons she carries with her both in and out of the gym.

Read more about Mikayla’s journey from her family’s basement gym to the national stage, and how powerlifting is shaping her path at JMU: Link in bio! Photo of Mikayla Dolina lifting. by @jmuchbs

James Madison University’s Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services (IIHHS) has been awarded a $1.97 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to launch the Central Shenandoah Maternal Produce Prescription Program (CS-MP3).

Beginning in 2027, the initiative will connect pregnant and postpartum women experiencing food insecurity with monthly produce prescriptions, individualized nutrition education, care coordination and community resources. Through partnerships with regional healthcare providers, public health organizations and food access agencies, the program aims improve maternal nutrition and strengthen health outcomes for mothers and infants across the region.
