#fotolibros #photobook #joanalvado #misterio #portugal by @joanalvado
I am very happy to share that Os Batismos da Meia‑Noite is becoming a book!!! This work is a special personal journey that began in 2021 with an unexpected invitation. The studio Fahr023.1, from Porto, contacted me to offer me a residency in the north of Portugal, in a place that, in their own words, “we believe could be right for you”: Peneda‑Gerês. A mountain I had never heard of before. Five years later, these images have gone a long way: Arles, Premio Galicia, Adorna, the first show we did at Encontros da Imagem a few years ago… and now the work is finally taking the form of a beautiful book. I haven’t held the physical copies yet (cannot wait for it) and I will be sharing more details very soon. The book will be available for sale shortly, in bookstores and online. For now, if you’d like to pre‑order a signed copy, you can send me a message, an email… or simply drop a line here. Thanks for the support along the way. @fahr021.3 @northland.pt @filipafroisalmeida @herphotoagency @cao1caoyi @howlingcactus_ by @joanalvado
La Bête (The Beast). Work developed in the residency for creation of the Villa Perochon, in April 2025 (those were the days ✨️). "La Bête" is a visual essay on monstrosity and the figure of the monster.  The work raises open questions on the cultural constructs that activate our fear, how we relate to the unknown, and to what extent the monstrous resides within us. @villaperochon by @joanalvado
La Bête (The Beast) "La Bête" is a visual essay on monstrosity and the figure of the monster, understood in a very open way. The work is based on myths existing in the natural environment of the Marais Poitevin, especially the figure of the Galipote: a wolf-like creature that was a true belief for the local inhabitants for decades. Created in the residency for creation of the Villa Perochon, in April 2025, exaclty one year ago :'). PS: Do not miss the RJPI encounters if you happen to be near Niort these days ✨️❤️ by @joanalvado

The work is based on myths existing in the natural environment of the Marais Poitevin, especially the figure of the Galipote: a wolf-like creature that was a true belief for the local inhabitants for decades. This work is now on display in the Musée Donjon of Niort (FR), as a part of the show “Créatures fantastiques”, that collects myths and legends of the Marais Poitevin. Here my monsters are shown together with the work of Melanie Dornier. And I am in Niort this week for visiting the museum and join the events related to this exhibition. Os Batismos da Meia-Noite by Joan Alvado @joanalvado The mountainous heart of Alto Minho, in the North of Portugal, is a mystical territory, where isolation caused by the natural environment has shaped the beliefs of its inhabitants for centuries. Here, several spiritual practices, that many would believe only remain in the memory of old books, are still alive among the population: spells, possessions, black magic rituals, witchcraft, sacrifices, exorcisms, apparitions and a wide range of amulets and rituals of protection against Evil. Os batismos da meia-noite is a photographic essay halfway between fantasy and ethnographic research about a set of beliefs that many insist on classifying as folklore that belongs to the past. The work confirms the survival of a unique spiritual worldview. A legacy of popular culture passed down through generations in a place as symbolic as is Serra da Peneda: the mountain where the forces of light and darkness are waging a battle since immemorial time. . Joan Alvado @joanalvado Born in Altea, 1979)\, he is a photographer based in Barcelona since 2005. His work is based on the use of imagination as a tool to reinterpret the territory and transcend documentary representation. Part of his work resides in public and private collections in several countries. He has exhibited in spaces such as the Palau de la Virreïna (Barcelona), Fototeca de Cuba (La Habana), the Marion Center for Photographic Arts (San Diego, USA), among many others. His projects have been published in international media such as Newsweek, CNN, The Washington, among others. In 2022, he received the Galician Prize for Contemporary Photography. In 2025, he exhibit his work in the festival Les Rencontres d’Arles (France) and is selected to participate in Les Rencontres de la jeune photographie internationale, organized by the photography center Villa Perochon (Niort, France).
