The Epistle @threadsofsocialdiscourse opens tonight @thecampgallery in Miami!! Wish I was there! Can’t wait to see the pictures! This is a portrait of 16 year old Sybil Ludington, also known as the female Paul Revere. She made the solo midnight ride from her home in Danbury, Connecticut to warn the minutemen that the British were attacking. She rode through the night in forests filled with wild animals, hostile natives and Tory sympathizers. Still lots more to be done on this piece but I decided that the unpainted frame was drawing my eye to the edge of the piece over and over. So I experimented and painted the top half into the background. I’m so glad I did as now my vision is focused on the main character, where it should be. Next I’ll paint out the bottom half. Thank you to everyone who gave their help. Lots of people voted to keep the frame unpainted and I did enjoy the look and added texture but ultimately had to let it go in favor of the main drama. Current work in progress. Rachel Carson has long been an influence in my life. While working on this piece I am rereading Silent Spring and reading her biography and while I work I play YouTube movies about her. Immersing myself in my subject matter helps me to connect to her spirit and achievements. Happy Independence Day! 🎆🎇 This is me in the studio sewing the fiber art piece “The Grimke Sisters Speak Out”. This piece is about two sisters who, in the early 1800s, tirelessly campaigned against slavery. This is now on exhibit in the Miami Fiber Art Triennial, @miamifibertriennial a massive fiber art exhibition covering indoor and outdoor venues in Miami.
